    Job Description

    The successful candidate will work with other engineers and technicians in the Magnetic Media Characterization lab. at Western Digital Media R&D center to support both, HAMR and PMR media development with special emphasis on HAMR (Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording). The candidate will collect experimental data, process the data and report the results. The candidate will work towards improving the available instrumentation and develop novel measurement methodologies and instrumentation for HAMR characterization.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Learn to operate the instrumentation available in the lab.
    • Learn the sample preparation methodologies used in the lab.
    • Learn the data processing methodologies used in the lab.
    • Prepare samples for measurement and perform measurements.
    • Use equipment and materials properly, follow operating instructions, use protective equipment when required. Observes all safety standards.
    • Perform moderate instrumentation troubleshooting. Learn about all the possible issues with the instrumentation and take the correct action to remedy.
    • Compile logbooks and document test procedures.
    • Process the data and summarize the results and conclusions in reports.
    • Improve the current instrumentation and develop new instrumentation for lab. and factory support.
    • Responsibilities include collaboration with other groups such, as the media development groups and the magnetic recording groups, towards improving the media performance.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Ph.D. in physics, applied physics, electrical engineering, or related field is preferred.
    • Hand-on experience with magnetic measurement techniques such as PPMS, VSM and magneto-optical characterization techniques.
    • Strong background in the physics of ferromagnetic granular media, including magnetic anisotropy, magnetization processes and thermal relaxation.
    • Strong experience with instrumentation development. Experience with instrumentation programming languages.
    • Other helpful skills include:
    • Proficient communication;
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
    • Problem solving and analytical skills;
    • Innovative and detail oriented.
