    Job Description

    The System Design Engineer is a part of the Systems and Architecture Engineering organization. The successful candidate will excel at problem solving and critical thinking at the system level to enable the investigation, planning, and implementation of test systems and methods, vet architectural direction and provide practical implementation methods, as well as provide overall system guidance that enables Western Digital to produce the best enterprise SSDs in the storage market.  As part of a broad cross-functional team, the candidate will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of product platform development.

    RESPONSIBILITIES                                      

    • Help identify and fill system gaps in platforms and products to ensure all teams’ output integrate in an optimal manner.
    • Vet architectural decisions and directions and provide practical implementation methods that span a variety of potential products related to a platform.
    • Devise experiments and critically evaluate test results.
    • Effectively document work, the results of experiments, and conclusions drawn, as well as provide training documentation for system tools.
    • Use broad skill base to support the above activities. These skills include hardware design and analysis, diagnostic and application software and firmware development, data analysis and reporting.
    • Apply critical thinking to competitive analysis results/data and provide product development guidance.

    Requirements

    • Engineering or related technical degree.
    • Minimum five years industry experience.
    • Ability to work well with multiple teams of various disciplines.
    • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
    • Storage experience in development, testing and/or failure analysis.
    • Flash experience, NAND or NOR, or other non-volatile memory technologies.
    • HW/ASIC/FPGA development (one or more of the following)
      • HW design and schematic development
      • ASIC design
      • HDL coding and design experience
      • FPGA/ASIC build and timing closure
    • PCB development (one or more of the following)
      • PCB schematic capture
      • PCB layout and/or reviewer knowledge
      • PCB signal integrity modeling or measurement
    • Software development (one or more of the following)
      • Diagnostic and/or production test software development
      • Coding in one or more of the following: Java, Visual Basic, C/C++/C#, Python, Perl
      • Web client, GUI internal software tool development
    • Firmware development (one or more of the following)
      • Code development that drives hardware directly
      • Assembly language coding experience
      • Code development that does not require an operating system
    • Hands-on laboratory experience using equipment such as power supplies, oscilloscopes, and analyzers.
    • Disciplined approach to problem solving, running experiments, documentation and presenting results.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office tool suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Outlook).
    • Mechanical design experience is a plus
    • Control systems experience is a plus
