Job Description

Western Digital, the premiere producer of storage solutions including hard disk drives (WD and G-Technology brands) and solid-state drives (SanDisk brand), is seeking a technician or engineer with significant hands-on AFM experience. Magnetic media used to store information in hard drives is composed of tens of thin films ranging from angstroms to tens of nanometers in thickness, with grain sizes on the order of nanometers. The surface roughness of these films is vitally important to media performance. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• This position involves using Bruker AFMs to analyze surface roughness and characterize surface defects on cutting-edge magnetic media, including Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) and Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (MAMR) Technologies.
• The successful candidate will also perform AFM and MFM (Magnetic Force Microscopy) analyses of reading and writing heads for HDD's.
• Our lab includes a wide variety of analytical instrumentation. The candidate may be asked to perform other techniques, such as SEM/EDX or Focused Ion Beam (FIB), depending on business needs and the candidate's skill set.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

• AS or BS in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or other related engineering discipline. 
• Significant hands-on experience with AFM is required. 
• Strong problem solving abilities and the desire to work in a team environment are essential. 
• The candidate will join a team of three AFM engineers and technicians, and dozens of other materials scientists and technicians, working to develop the next generation of Western Digital's storage technology.
• This position is located in our world-class Analytical Sciences Laboratory in San Jose, California.

PREFERRED: 

• SEM/EDS or FIB experience is a plus

• Strong problem-solving abilities and the desire to work in a team environment are essential.

• An employee’s pay position within the salary range may be based on several factors including but not limited to (1) relevant education; qualifications; certifications; and experience; (2) skills, ability, knowledge of the job; (3) performance, contribution and results; (4) geographic location; (5) shift; (6) internal and external equity; and (7) business and organizational needs.
• The salary range is what we believe to be the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting.  We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and this range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in Colorado or remote jobs that can be performed in Colorado.  This range may be modified in the future.
• You will also be eligible to participate in Western Digital's Short-Term Incentive (STI) Plan and to receive equity awards under our annual Long-Term Incentive (LTI) program, which consists of restricted stock units (RSUs), pursuant to the terms of these programs.  RSU awards are also available to eligible new hires, subject to Western Digital’s Standard Terms and Conditions for Restricted Stock Unit Awards.
