Job Description

The advanced media development group at Western Digital seeks highly motivated individuals to work on novel nano-engineered materials, processes, and designs. These building blocks are critical to delivering the increasing areal density needed to satisfy the exponential demand for data storage on magnetic hard disk drives. You will be expected to:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Work with teams of seasoned material scientists, engineers, and subject matter experts to fabricate and analyze magnetic thin films with a variety of characterization techniques.
• Assist in developing mathematical/statistical analysis to uncover correlations and causal relationships among metrics characterizing the performance of magnetic storage media.
• Understand and optimize material properties towards improving areal density growth.
• Collaborate with internal groups at WD as well as participate in external academic /industry consortium activities. There will be opportunities to gain professional visibility via publications and invention disclosures.

You will learn and grow with a team of technologists with decades of combined academic and industrial experience in applied physics, chemistry, materials science, mechanical engineering, electronics & electrical engineering, signal processing, software, and micro-magnetic modeling. This is an exciting opportunity at the intersection of materials engineering, statistical modeling, and data engineering.

Qualifications

REQUIRED: 

• MS/PhD degree in Physics/Math/Chemistry/Materials Science/Engineering.
• Hands-on knowledge of sputtering magnetic materials and/or characterization preferred.
• Ability to visualize and present data to varied audiences with charting tools.
• Knowledge of one or more of the following programming languages or equivalents: Python, JMP Scripting Language (JSL), MATLAB, R, Spotfire.
• Demonstrated written and/or verbal communication skills.
• All experience levels including fresh graduates are welcome.
