    Job Description

    Western Digital, the premiere producer of storage solutions including hard disk drives (WD and G-Technology brands) and solid-state drives (SanDisk brand), is seeking an engineer to prepare and analyze TEM lamella from magnetic media samples, and to interface with our media development team.  Magnetic media used to store information in hard drives is composed of stacks of thin films ranging from angstroms to tens of nanometers in thickness.  The primary purpose of our work is to support the development of the next generation of media technology.  The engineer will interface closely with our development team that submits these samples for analysis, working to create the next generation of media technology.  The candidate will work with and learn from experienced materials scientists.  In order to increase access to our busy FIB and TEM instruments, it is preferred if the the candidate has flexibility work one Saturday or Sunday each week in lieu of one day during the week: Mon to Fri.

    Qualifications

    BS (minimum), MS or PhD (preferred) in Materials Science, Physics, or other related engineering discipline is required.  Hands-on experience with FIB sample preparation and in-depth understanding of FIB automation is a plus.  STEM and SEM/EDS experience is preferred.  Strong problem-solving abilities and the desire to work in a team environment are essential.  The candidate will join a team of eight microscopists and sample prep engineers developing the next generation of Western Digital's storage technology.  This position is located in our world-class Analytical Sciences Laboratory in San Jose, California.
