    The Lead Mechanical Engineer is responsible for leading the team responsible for the design and development of electromechanical actuators for use in the aerospace and defense markets. The position requires extensive understanding of the behavior of mechanical systems as well as the interaction with BLDC prime movers.

     

    The position is responsible for leading a group of 6-10 mechanical engineers with various skill sets and experience levels.  This includes project planning, and resource assignment, and budgeting.

     

    The mechanical engineering team is responsible for reviewing and interpreting customer requirements, and assessing the level of effort required to fulfill them.  The team will engage with customers and internal leads and Subject Matter Experts (SME) for R&D, customer requirements development, proposals, design and development, initial prototype to production transition, and production support. This position is also responsible for assisting in the development and establishment of the product line road map as well as defining the research and development priorities that will ensure technology leadership within the market segments targeted for future growth

     

    Kearfott’s Aerospace and Defense EM applications include:

    • Missile Fin Control Actuation Systems
    • High Bandwidth position servos
    • Smart Linear actuators
    • Utility Actuation
    • Cockpit Controls

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE ENGINEERING

    Development of new concepts and proposal solutions

    Understanding of manufacturing and design trade-offs (practical implementation of designs)

    Development and validation of performance models

    Geartrain Design and Stress Analysis based on industry standard practices

    • Spur and Planetary geartrain design experience preferred

    Support cost proposal activity including:

    • Manufacturing and design cost assessment

    Participate as a member of a cross-functional project team focused on development of customer funded projects as well as IR&D projects

    Creates 3D CAD models of design concepts, and develops detailed 2D drawings while working with designers.

    Perform and coordinate design analysis using ANSYS, Matlab, and other CAE tools

     

    BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT

    • Travel as required to support market development and customer needs
    • Support and advance relationships with our customer’s engineering teams

     

    ENGINEERING SUPERVISOR

    • Direct priorities of components team with input from the Design Engineering Manager
    • Ability to lead 6-10 direct reports
    • Mentorship of less experienced team members

    Required Experience

    • 5+ years required in an aerospace motion control engineering and manufacturing environment
    • B.S., General Engineering, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering required
    • New product development experience required
    • Previous Engineering leadership experience preferred
    • 3-D CAD experience, SolidWorks preferred 
    • Must be legally authorized to work in the US, visa sponsorship not available
    • Must be able to work on U.S. government programs and/or obtain security clearance in the future
