    Spring 2019 Editorial Intern, Basic Books Editorial New York, New York Spring 2019 Editorial Department Internship, Basic Books SUMMARY Basic Books, an imprint of Perseus Books, a Hachette Book Group company, is seeking an intern in our Editorial Department for spring 2019, running from February 4 through April 26. The paid internship is 16 hours per week, at $15 per hour. The internship offers an opportunity to learn about different aspects of non-fiction book publishing, and particularly the work of book editors, while performing the day-to-day responsibilities described below. Scheduling is flexible, although we recommend that you attend our Wednesday morning Editorial Board meeting, where we discuss book proposals under consideration for acquisition. Please provide a Resume AND a Cover Letter describing the reasons for your interest in the position and in Basic Books. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE * Work with editorial assistants and editors to write sales and marketing copy and other materials * Research comparable works * Review book proposals and write readers reports * Perform administrative duties, including book mailings * Assist in the submission of books for prizes and awards * Attend and contribute in editorial and marketing meetings SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED * Strong academic and extracurricular record * A passion for serious non-fiction, and a strong interest in learning about book publishing generally and editorial acquisitions specifically * Excellent verbal and written communications skills * Must be highly organized, capable of multi-tasking, and detail-oriented * Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively * Must demonstrate imagination, creativity, original thinking, and ability to take initiative * Proficiency in Word, Outlook, and Excel ABOUT BASIC BOOKS Since its founding in 1952, Basic Books has shaped public debate by publishing award-winning works of non-fiction in history, science and mathematics, sociology, psychology, politics, and current affairs.
