    Position Description Payroll Accountant Location Arcata, CA USA Apply Now GENERAL SUMMARY Under the direction of the Controller, this position processes semi-monthly payroll and all related tax filings for all corporate staff. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Ensures corporate payroll is accurate and completed in accordance with payroll dates. Maintains and monitors timesheets for accuracy. Ensures all necessary approvals and leave time usage is in adherence to agency policy. Maintains Personnel Master File information related to processing payroll. Prepares and reports all state and federal quarterly and annual tax returns including but not limited to W2s, W3, 941s. Reconciles general ledger balance sheet accounts related to payroll on a monthly basis. Responds to requests for payroll related information such as labor or leave balance requests. Prepares and enters journal entries into accounting system including but not limited to monthly vacation liabilities and advance related entries. Monitors employee advance accounts and HR related allowances such as 401k and HS.A balances. Monitors all payroll related deductions. Processes all retirement/pension deferrals and related payments to 3 rd party administrators as required by law. Assist in preparing audit reports related to payroll such as 401K, workers compensation and annual tax returns. Recommends actions to be taken for identified financial and business risk situations and participates in the continuous improvement of payroll processes. Understanding of and demonstrated commitment to upholding Internews Core Values. Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Minimum one year of payroll processing experience. Associates degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school. General knowledge of not-for-profit Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Technical and logistical problem-solving capabilities and ability to manage competing deadlines. Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills. High degree of social adaptability and sensitivity to cultural differences. Intermediate MS Office suite skills, particularly Excel. Ability to self-manage competing deadlines. Excellent organizational skills. US work authorization required. Understanding of and demonstrated commitment to upholding Internews Core Values PREFERRED: Experience in multi-state payroll. Advanced degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field. Working knowledge of Uniform Guidance 2cfr200. Experience with enterprise level non-profit accounting software.
