    Early Childhood Education Intern Location US-NY-Manhattan Job ID 2018-10529 # of Openings Remaining 1 Type Intern Department CHPRG Children's Programming Overview The New York Public Library is an essential early literacy partner to families before their children enter school. It is therefore in an ideal and unique position to enhance early literacy skills during these critical years. NYPL launched an enhanced early literacy program, beginning with 20 branches in fall 2015 and expanded to 87 in 2017. This enhanced early literacy presence consists of enhanced storytimes, family literacy workshops, Pre-K for All and 3-K for All partnerships, and various partnerships with other city and state organizations, such as the Department of Education, Citys First Readers, the Department of Mental Health and Hygiene, the Administration of Childrens Services, NYCs Early Learning Network and Ready to Read at NY Libraries. The Early Childhood Education Intern will support the early literacy departments initiatives with a focus on the Tremont and Morrisania branches, including supporting branch staff with early literacy programming, school partnerships and outreach. This position involves developing print materials or activity curricula to assist branch staff delivering programs, culminating in a final early literacy program pilot conducted in Tremont and Morrisania. Principal Responsibilities Reporting to the Early Literacy Coordinator, the Early Childhood Education Intern will: Develop print materials or activity curricula for branch staff to support early literacy initiatives Assist branch staff in early literacy programs including storytimes, family literacy workshops, STEM programs, and class visits Perform outreach with branch staff or individually for early literacy programs to community organizations with a focus on organizations that serve families with children 0-3 years old Assist with developing and implementing new early literacy programs around technology for children ages 0-5. Plan, coordinate and evaluate an early literacy program pilot to be conducted in both Morrisania and Tremont branches Collaborate with early literacy coordinators and Morrisania and Tremont childrens librarians and branch staff to implement early literacy programs Assist the Early Childhood Education department with system-wide initiatives (as needed) Attend Early Childhood Education department team meetings Minimum Qualifications Currently pursuing advanced degree in early childhood education, public health, library science or related field Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously Good interpersonal and written communication skills Demonstrated reliability and flexibility Demonstrated computer skills including Google products, Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint Ability to work individually and collaboratively Preferred Qualifications Spanish language skills Interest in early literacy, early child development, and community engagement All team members are expected and encouraged to embody the NYPL Core Values: Be Helpful to patrons and colleagues Be Resourceful in solving problems Be Curious in all aspects of your work Physical Duties Must be willing to travel to and within the Bronx multiple times a week Limited physical effort and light lifting required Starting Salary USD $18.00/Hr.
