The Lead Product Engineer-Cell will be responsible to lead the design, development, release, and validation of prismatic lithium ion battery cells for customized applications in the government, military, aerospace, and other specialty, high-performance market segments. The Lead Product Engineer will provide direction to the product development team regarding application requirements flow down, mechanical design, prototyping, and validation testing of battery cells.
Essential/Key Functions:
- Read and comprehend instructions and follow established procedures
- Supervisory responsibility and functional direction of a mechanical engineering team dedicated to product-line level development.
- Direct requirements reviews, test readiness reviews, and design reviews to ensure that the product meets all stakeholder requirements
- Drive the use of best practices and maintain standards for use of best practices at each stage of product development (i.e. requirements capture, DFMEA, compliance matrix, analytical verification, DVP&R, etc…)
- Generate innovative detailed design concepts
- Direct the creation of models, prints, and BOM for design in a revision-controlled state throughout the development and production launch process
- Perform thermal, static stress, vibration and shock analysis using simulation software
- Check part and assembly drawings, ensure that tolerance stack-up analysis is verified, lead the implementation of GD&T and drafting standards
- Ensure that a common methodology is used to define critical characteristics and inspection criteria for incoming components, assemblies, and final assemblies for product line
- Create and release assembly and functional test specifications related to battery assemblies
- Support supplier evaluation and selection. Support activities related to the measurement of critical characteristics internally and at suppliers.
- Create, support, and update DFMEAs and DVPRs as required.
Management Responsibilities:
- direct team of engineers / designers to achieve the above objectives
Minimum (Required) Qualifications:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution; other Engineering degrees such as Chemical or Electrical will also be considered.
- Minimum of 10 years of product development and design release to production experience within a phase-gate style project management system
- Minimum of 3 years of battery cell design, manufacturing, and application experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficient in SolidWorks CAD software and Simulation/Analysis tools
- Proficient in the application of GD&T for component and assembly prints and specifications
- Proficient in the application of engineering principles to cell design requirements such as mechanical shock and vibration, thermal management, compression, electrical energy management, and safety.
- Familiarity with thermodynamic principles influencing of transport, diffusion, and reaction kinetics as applied to electrochemical energy storge and release systems.
- Familiarity with battery cell assembly techniques, tooling, and equipment at prototype, pilot, and production scale.
- DFMEA and DVP&R composition experience for electrical/mechanical/chemical systems
- Ability to lead, direct, and motivate a team
- Excellent communication skills, verbal, written, and visual
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially MS Excel
- FEA, thermal, vibration and shock analysis experience
Preferred (Desired) Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Systems Engineering
- Battery module and pack product development experience
- Data analysis skills in an Excel Macro language, Python, or MATLAB
- Six sigma green belt, design for six sigma, or robust design methodology expertise
