Automation Engineer Intern Position
Program Objective/Scope
At BD Biosciences, our purpose is to empower scientists and doctors to transform lives, one cell at a time. The summer internship program at BD Biosciences in San Diego, California, provides students hands-on exposure to BDB’s Research Reagents Development group, a leading provider of innovative tools that drive a deeper understanding of the human immune system and unlock its unique power to fight diseases like cancer, HIV, and COVID-19.
As part of a global organization, you may work within cross-functional or interdisciplinary teams while collaborating and supporting multiple internal partners and customers. The internship program will provide endless opportunities to engage with peers, senior personnel, and supervisors who will provide informal mentoring and coaching.
Throughout our summer internship, students will build an extensive professional network, learn how to work in an engineering environment, and deliver business presentations showcasing their work. BD's summer internship program is a great opportunity to gain exposure to biotechnology and BD’s culture.
We are recruiting for highly driven Data Science, Computer Science, and Computer Engineering students with a passion for innovation, product development and working in biotechnology.
The candidate is responsible for all housing and transportation costs.
Data Scientist position
This Data Scientist role will lead a critical data analysis project for the Automation team in Research and Development. Specifically, this project involves designing and integrating a new automated analysis solution into an existing analysis pipeline. This assignment will require the ability to interpret, create new code, and perform beta testing for the in-house customer team. It will also require accurate translation of user requirements to technical implementation, especially as they relate to data analysis and visualization. The successful completion of this project will support a R&D testing team with an automated solution to assessing and determining antibody reagent shelf-life/expiration dating.
Duties and responsibilities
Work closely with internal software developers and internal bench scientists to understand project requirements and accurately scope a new analysis solution
Learn and understand the existing R code base and advise on how the new solution fits into it
Adapt an existing analysis tool to function as a standalone script in R with new biological inputs provided by the bench scientists
Perform beta testing to demonstrate functionality of the coded solution and its ability to address customer team needs
Generate a ‘How to use’ step by step instructions document
Provide instructor led training to the internal customer team to onboard the new analysis program
Required qualifications
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction as to duration.
Ability to work 40 hours per week for the duration of the 10 - 12-week summer internship period.
Education
Minimum experience: A senior year student enrolled in a Bachelor’s program pursing a degree in Data Science.
Preferable experience: Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Life Sciences, or a related technical discipline and at least 1 year into a Masters or PhD program in Data Science or related field.
Knowledge and skills
Ability to program independently in languages such as R or Python (R preferred)
Familiar with basic data science principles: data extraction, data cleaning, and data visualization
Basic understanding of statistics, modeling, and significance testing
Self-motivated with effective analytical and problem-solving skills
Flexible team player with good communication skills
Strong time management and prioritization skills
Strength with distilling complex topics into concise and easy to understand language
Knowledge of basic scientific principles in biology and chemistry and/or experience working closely with scientists on data analysis or data pipeline projects (Familiarity with flow cytometry principles preferred)
