Program Objective/Scope

The summer internship program at BD Biosciences in San Jose, CA provides students hands-on exposure to BD's product development process for innovation and commercialization. Our unique development process differentiates BD from the competition and is the means by which we meet the needs of a wide range of medical device global markets.

As part of a global organization, you may work within cross-functional or interdisciplinary teams while collaborating and supporting multiple internal partners and customers. The internship program will provide endless opportunities to engage with peers, senior personnel, and supervisors who will provide informal mentoring and coaching.

Throughout our summer internship, students will build an extensive professional network, learn how to work in an engineering environment, build and hone laboratory skills, and deliver business presentations showcasing their work. BD's summer internship program is a great opportunity to gain exposure to the medical device industry and BD’s culture.

We are recruiting for highly driven Mechanical Engineering,Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or Life Sciences students with a passion for innovation, product development and working in the medical device industry.

The candidate is responsible for all housing and transportation costs.

Project Areas:

Each R&D intern will be assigned an individual project to lead and drive to further develop thei r technical expertise in the Instrument Engineering space. During your summer internship, you will have the opportunity to:

• Support execution of technical and/or cross-functional project work

• Ensure the implementation and rigor of product development processes and design control procedures

• Gain knowledge of various subsystems of a flow cytometer

• Gain exposure to integration testing and cytometer set-up

• Gain exposure to Opto-Electro Mechanical) Instrument testing and characterization activities

• Gain exposure to Instrument embedded control and test software

Required qualifications:

• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction as to duration.

• Ability to work 40 hours per week for the duration of the 10 - 12-week summer internship period.

Education

• BS/MS/PhD student pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering,Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or the Life Sciences

Experience

• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

• Understanding of basic principles of Physics

• Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills

• Ability to understand complex workflows and develop and validate innovative solutions

• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills and an aptitude for learning new technologies

• Ability to learn quickly, deal with ambiguity, take initiative and achieve results

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior internship/co-op experience

• Hands on experience with lab tools and measurement instruments

• Experience with Electromechanical Design Software Tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, ProE

• Experience with programming languages such as Python, C, C++

• Experience with Simulation Software Tools such as ANSYS, MATLAB/Simulink, Zemax, Cosmol

Salary ranges have been implemented to reward associates fairly and competitively, as well as to support recognition of associates’ progress, ranging from entry level to experts in their field, and talent mobility. There are many factors, such as location, that contribute to the range displayed. The salary offered to a successful candidate is based on experience, education, skills, and actual work location. Salary ranges may vary for Field-based and Remote roles.
