PROGRAM OBJECTIVE/SCOPE

At BD Biosciences, our purpose is to empower scientists and doctors to transform lives, one cell at a time. The summer internship program at BD Biosciences in San Diego, California, provides students hands-on exposure to BDB’s Research Reagents Development group, a leading provider of innovative tools that drive a deeper understanding of the human immune system and unlock its unique power to fight diseases like cancer, HIV, and COVID-19.

As part of a global organization, you may work within cross-functional or interdisciplinary teams while collaborating and supporting multiple internal partners and customers. The internship program will provide endless opportunities to engage with peers, senior personnel, and supervisors who will provide informal mentoring and coaching.

Throughout our summer internship, students will build an extensive professional network, learn how to work in a research and development environment, build and hone laboratory skills, and deliver business presentations showcasing their work. BD's summer internship program is a great opportunity to gain exposure to the biotechnology and BD’s culture.

We are recruiting for highly driven life science and engineering students with a passion for innovation, product development and working in biotechnology. The candidate is responsible for all housing and transportation costs.

PROJECT AREAS:

Each R&D intern will be assigned an individual project to lead and drive to further develop their technical engineering expertise in the Research Reagents space. During your summer internship, you will have the opportunity to work in one of the following areas:

AB TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT

• Development of cell-line engineering methods in support of de novo antibody discovery

• Gain experience in the various workflows that are involved in de novo antibody discovery including immunogen design/generation, model systems development and hybridoma screening

AUTOMATING FLOW CYTOMETRY REAGENT PREPARATION AND TESTING

• Development and optimization of design, process, and analysis of automation solutions for the testing and analysis of flow cytometry antibody reagents.

• With a focus on bench science, this individual will work cross-functionally within the automation team to support hardware related automation and process efficiency-building opportunities, specifically pertaining to the method of lysing whole blood.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction as to duration

• Ability to work 40 hours per week for the duration of the 10 - 12 week summer internship period

EDUCATION

• BS and/or MS/PhD student pursuing a degree in cell or molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, bioengineering, and related fields in the biological and life sciences

EXPERIENCE

• Hands-on experience with bench-level lab work

• Proficiency in tissue culture and cell handling techniques

• Tissue culture and cell handling experience, with a demonstrated ability to perform aseptic technique

• Self-motivated with effective analytical and problem-solving skills

• Strong attention to detail

• Ability to work effectively in a team environment with strong interpersonal skills

• Effective oral and written communication skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Prior internship/co-op experience

• Experience in maintaining both adherent and suspension cell lines with proven aseptic/sterile techniques

• Experience in preparing and/or handling plasmid DNA for cell transfection

• Experience/familiarity in molecular biology, especially recombinant DNA technology

Salary ranges have been implemented to reward associates fairly and competitively, as well as to support recognition of associates’ progress, ranging from entry level to experts in their field, and talent mobility. There are many factors, such as location, that contribute to the range displayed. The salary offered to a successful candidate is based on experience, education, skills, and actual work location. Salary ranges may vary for Field-based and Remote roles.

$32.10 - $53.00
