Program Objective/Scope

The summer internship program within Research and Development at BD provides students with the opportunity to gain exposure to BD's process of designing and developing medical device products for different global markets! As a global organization, you may work within cross-functional or interdisciplinary teams while collaborating and supporting multiple internal partners and customers. The internship program will provide endless opportunities to engage with peers, senior personnel, and supervisors who will provide informal mentoring and coaching.

Throughout our summer internship, students will build an extensive professional network, learn how to work in a scientific/engineering R&D environment, build hands-on laboratory skills, and deliver business presentations showcasing their work. BD's summer internship program is a great opportunity to gain exposure to the medical device industry and BD’s culture.

We are recruiting for highly driven engineering /business students with a passion for technology and product development in the medical device industry.

Project Areas

Diagnostic Systems develops a wide range of products for detecting infectious diseases. These products include small rapid Point-of-Care devices that test a single sample at a time, benchtop instruments that test hundreds of samples in a day, and large automated instruments that test thousands of samples in a day. The products are also connected to lab information systems to create a complete solution for the customer. All of these products require software-controlled electromechanical hardware with diagnostic chemistry that is designed and tested in the Sparks, MD facility.

This R&D internship posting is specific to new product development project management. Our Strategy Realization Office (SRO) tracks the progress and budget of each R&D project. Summer interns will work closely with a team of project managers and use analytical skillsets across multiple projects in the BD Diagnostic Systems R&D portfolio. Expected tasks include:

• Assist with data mining across project schedules and risk registers to build power platforms supporting SRO Operations dashboards.

• Run schedule health checks.

• Build and revise new and existing SRO Share Point sites.

Required qualifications:

Education

• BS and/or MS/PhD student pursuing a degree in any of the areas listed below:

• Business Analytics

• Data Analytics

• Information Systems

• Operations Management

• Project Management

• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction as to duration.

Experience

• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

• Ability to work 40 hours per week for the duration of the 10 - 12-week summer internship period.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior internship/co-op experience
