Block Island Marine GLOBE Intern
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) has teamed up with The Nature Conservancy's (TNC) Growing Leaders On Behalf of the Environment (GLOBE) Program to offer 30+ paid internships throughout the country. This is the position description for one of the positions. Each position comes with an orientation in Washington, D.C., followed by a 10-week internship.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The 2016 Block Island GLOBE intern will work with Associate State Director and Block Island Program Director to lead the research work for the marine program on Block Island. This work includes water quality monitoring, juvenile fish survey work, scallop survey, oyster survey, marine invert survey, and much more. They would get experience working with seasonal assistants, LEAF, TNC staff, and dedicated volunteers for a well-rounded experience. This works rolls up into a better data set for the significance of the Block Island marine environment. The GLOBE intern would also get to work with coastal restoration scientists in mainland Rhode Island once a week to assist with reef building and living shoreline and their associated monitoring. Over the last two years the Block Island marine program has grown leaps and bounds and this GLOBE intern will have the opportunity to take it to the next level which is a huge benefit to our program.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS • HS Diploma or equivalent. Enrolled in an undergraduate program, graduate program, or a recent graduate (within two years of graduating from an undergraduate or graduate program) for biology, conservation/environmental studies, marine biology, ichthyology or related field, or equivalent • Experience conducting scientific field research, recording data, writing summary reports • Experience, education, or training in snorkeling and using a kayak • Experience working with Microsoft office suite software • Experience managing multiple projects and prioritizing tasks • Experience, education, or training in swimming and water safety skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS • Experience handling small boats • Ability to identify eastern US coastal fish, plant, and invertebrate species • Experience in laboratory fish and invertebrates sample processing
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT The Block Island Marine Globe Intern may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions may: • Require physical exertion and /or muscular strain. • Present occasional possibility of injury. • Require long hours in isolated settings.
Special Note: It is preferred that the GLOBE intern can commit to extend to Septemer 30, 2015.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
This is a full-time, temporary internship position with a position term of May 31st – August 5th, 2016. It is preferred if the GLOBE intern can commit to extend to September 30, 2016. Housing is provided for the duration of the internship. This is a remote island setting that is rural in character. The GLOBE intern will have his/her own room but bathrooms and kitchen are communal with approximately 5 additional people living in the space.
