Since 1877, The Fresh Air Fund has provided free summer programs to more than 1.8 million New York City children from underserved communities. Every summer, 3,000 children visit our five sleepaway camps to learn about the outdoors, make new friends and develop trust and personal strength at camp. Our camps are located 65 miles north of New York City in Fishkill, NY, and our property has over 2,000 acres of beautiful land with lakes, ponds, streams and hiking trails through the woods.

We are looking for dedicated and motivated individuals who want to have a fun, challenging summer while making a difference in the lives of underserved youth. Staff members from around the world will join us this summer in a variety of roles at our five camps.

We are hiring Village Leaders and Head Counselors for the following camps:

    • Camp Tommy - our camp for boys (ages 13 - 15)
    • Camp Hidden Valley - our camp for girls and boys (ages 8-12)

Village Leaders and Head Counselors have overall responsibilities for a group of 36 – 48 campers and directly supervise 12-15 staff members. They are responsible for planning and supervising village activities and assist general counselors in planning their program. They also evaluate counselors and run staff meetings. Village Leaders and Head Counselors are on the administrative team and maintain active communication with fellow administrators, counselors, campers and parents.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Providing leadership and guidance for assigned staff members
    • Working closely with staff to ensure that the goals and objectives of the camp are carried out
    • Assisting the administration in the enforcement of camp rules and policies
    • Maintaining open communication between counselors and the administration
    • Preparing and submitting reports, staff evaluations and inventories as requested

We are happy to offer internship credit to students who are eligible to receive it for their time at camp. We also offer a travel stipend for staff members traveling 300 miles or more to camp.
