  • Responsibilities

    The Environmental Educator Intern will be for assisting the Wildlife Refuge in conjunction with the James River Association (a partnering non-profit watershed organization). The primary responsibility of the selectee will involve working with a small team of educators to support curriculum-based programming for students visiting the James River Ecology School at Presquile National Wildlife Refuge.

    Tasks include:

    • Prepare and conduct on-site environmental education programs for middle to high school-aged youth;
    • Assist with the management of wildlife-dependent recreation opportunities such as wildlife observation, wildlife photography, interpretation (lead nature walks, presentations and demonstration to a variety of audiences) and off-site outreach;
    • Help maintain facilities, grounds, and operations of the Menenak Discovery Center;
    • And opportunistically participate in wildlife surveys, tree plantings, and invasive species control.

  • Qualifications

    Applicants should have good communication skills, flexibility in daily schedule, and be motivated to be part of a dynamic work environment. The position requires a certain level of physical fitness and dexterity. Demands include: the ability to lift 50 lbs, hike three miles at a brisk pace, and paddle canoe and kayak in windy conditions.
