Flight 93 National Memorial honors the passengers and crew members of Flight 93. Richard J. Guadagno was a passenger on United Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. His love for animals and the outdoors, led him to a career as a biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, dedicating his life to protecting the environment. After graduating from Rutgers University, he worked for seventeen years in refuges in New Jersey, Delaware, Oregon, and finally, Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge in northern California where he was a Project Manager. In Richard’s memory, the Guadagno family sponsors one exceptional candidate to continue their career aspirations through the Richard J. Guadagno Fellow experience at Flight 93 National Memorial and another Fellow at Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge in California annually.

Flight 93 National Memorial is looking for a creative, self-motivated young professional to serve as an SCA Fellow with the interpretive education team. Duties include but are not limited to:

    • Research, prepare and present educational and interpretive programs for visitors on a variety of topics
    • Develop new curriculum-based materials for educational programming to serve all ages, elementary school through adults
    • Connect the passengers and crew members’ life stories to the memorial and how it honors their lives and courageous actions
    • Write and design a new self-guiding booklet/brochure for the walking trails at the national memorial, adapting the Learning Center materials to an outdoor education platform for students and visitors, especially school-aged groups through adults in this self-guided brochure
    • Target local school districts and build relationships with local schools to provide remote curriculum and to recruit field trips
    • Other opportunities may include developing content for social media platforms and the memorial’s website, helping to develop short videos, and other communications projects to educated visitors about the memorial and its design
    • Develop informational brochures for visitor use. Experience with publishing and photo editing software is a plus, especially InDesign and various Adobe programs.
    • Be a vital team member for annual special events, such as the September 11 remembrance event, reforestation events in the spring, Friends Speaker Series
    • Assist with curatorial collection of tribute items left at the site by visitors
    • Occasional cleaning assistance with tribute items, exhibit cases, work spaces and visitor center spaces as needed
    • Selectee will work directly with interpretive park rangers and the Education Program Specialist, including staffing the visitor center front desk
    • The nature of this work also requires clerical work such as typing, data collection for statistical purposes, recording and reporting visitor use statistics, traffic counts, and occasional filing to ensure accurate records for the site are kept.
