  • Responsibilities

    A Lifeguard is responsible for providing supervision and ensuring a safe environment at the camp’s waterfront activities. Assist with the management of the physical operation of the waterfront facilities and equipment. Promote high standards in all aspects of the camp program. Serve as a role model to campers and staff by your actions, appearance, manners, language, and general conduct. Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    1. Supervise and guard all waterfront activities.
    • Provide surveillance during aquatic activities to help prevent and to manage injuries.
    • Perform rescues as needed.
    • Perform First Aid and CPR and other emergency management skills as needed.
    • Understand and implement appropriate response to changes in water conditions or weather conditions affecting the waterfront.
    • Enforce waterfront safety procedures for both staff and campers.
    • Evaluate aquatics abilities of campers and staff.
    • Ensure that ACA standards, state codes, and guidelines from GSNorCal and GSUSA regarding waterfront programs are being followed.
    • Assist in the delivery and supervision of all water activities and special events at the waterfront.
    1. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the waterfront program area.
    • Conduct daily check of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
    • Clean waterfront area daily keeping it free of hazards and debris.
    • Assist in the set-up of waterfront / pool areas.
    1. Provide superior client service to all campers, parents/families, staff, volunteers and vendors.
    • Identify client needs, make suggestions, initiate and follow through with appropriate action.
    1. Participate as a member of the camp team to plan, direct, and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
    • Assist in the planning of any special events on or near the waterfront.
    • Participate in staff meetings.
    • Live in unit with campers and provide supervision and support in various roles to Counselors.
    1. Other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications
    • Current certification in First Aid and CPR PR.
    • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (or equivalent). Open water module preferred at Sugar Pine.
    • Must submit health history record and examination record dated within one year on first day of work.
    • Minimum age: 18 years.
    • For positions at Sugar Pine- ability to obtain, or current certification in Small Craft Safety or other specific boating certifications.
    • Support the beliefs and principles of the Girl Scout Organization.
  • Desired skills

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Knowledge and experience with Girl Scout resident camp program preferred.
    • Training and experience in leading waterfront activities.
    • Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.

    Physical Aspects of the Position:

    • Ability to communicate and work with girls grades K-12 and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
    • Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply behavior-management techniques.
    • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to hazards.
    • Physical ability to respond to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and maintain constant supervision of campers.
    • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
    • Ability to carry and load luggage, tables, chairs, and other program equipment.
    • Ability to walk/hike several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain.
    • Possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
    • Ability to live in a rustic setting and work irregular hours.
    • Operate with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, raccoons, and other wildlife common to the area.
