Mountaineering & Wilderness Ranger Intern
Previous climbing experience required
You will work as a climbing intern as part of a wilderness ranger team, led by experienced climbing rangers and other wilderness rangers. This position will assist climbing rangers in providing a field presence in the Park’s wilderness areas, primarily popular climbing approaches and routes, but also other areas of the wilderness, both on and off trail. You will make educational contacts to visitors, especially regarding climbing routes, low-impact climbing methods and requirements, and food storage, as well as information about conditions, safety, and resource protection.
You will assist in wilderness patrols, both solo and alongside experienced rangers, make educational visitor contacts in the backcountry to encourage Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics, maintain backcountry toilets, gather data, and assist in other wilderness management tasks. (50%). You will also assist visitors and climbers at the Wilderness Information Center, issue backcountry permits, conduct informal educational talks to visitors on Leave No Trace, wilderness ethics and wilderness management, and provide other tasks or projects as assigned (50%). You may also assist in Search and Rescue operations if the need arises.

Location Description
Located in North Cascades National Park, in the Pacific Northwest, WA. Position is based out of Marblemount, WA, a rural community located just outside the park. Drive time to Seattle is about 2 - 2.5 hours.
Training Provided
National Park Service operations; Wilderness Management; Visitor services, field patrol procedures, and visitor contacts; Snow travel and ice-axe training; GPS training; Leave No Trace trainer course; Basic trail work skills; Intro to Search and Rescue.
