New York, NY
Internship
Unpaid
  • Responsibilities

This exciting internship is for students who are action driven and client focused. You have a strong background in Emergency Management, Homeland Security or related fields and you have a talent for working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software.

You'll work behind-the-scenes developing plans for effective service delivery. From small house fires to local natural disasters, you want to help where you're needed, so people can have clean water, safe shelter and hot meals when they need them most.

    • The department operates in two states--Operational State and Steady State. Operational State refers to instances where a significant incident has occurred and the activation of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is warranted. During Steady State (meaning non-emergency times), the department works on planning and readiness.
    • You’ll work directly with the Planning, Readiness, and Situational Awareness Director, a subject-matter expert, and leader in the Emergency Management industry.
    • During Operational State you'll work with other Planning Volunteers to gain complete situational awareness of what is happening in the incident zone, then produce and disseminate incident reports.
    • You'll contribute to the development of an Incident Action Plan (IAP). This plan essentially outlines the ‘what’, ‘how’, ‘why’, and ‘when’ of the Red Cross disaster relief activities for that incident.
    • For Steady State, your projects will consist of any of the following categories, which are geared towards sharpening the skills of the Planning Department for future disasters: speedy volunteer onboarding process, volunteer training curricula and training exercises, and volunteer engagement.
    • May also take advantage of Disaster Relief fieldwork.
