  • Responsibilities

    Outreach and Trail Intern working in the Recreation Operations section of the Willamette Valley Project (WVP) for the Army Corps of Engineers. WVP is a major water resource project responsible for operating 13 dams and managing natural resources and recreation in the lakes and surrounding lands. We manage nearly 50,000 acres in the Willamette, McKenzie, and Santiam watersheds. The Recreation Operations section is known for their community partnerships to enhance recreation opportunities in local communities near our lakes.

    Primary outreach duties include planning and developing materials for youth environmental education, and assisting with dam tours, Junior Ranger programs in the campground, and outreach events in the local community. Also updating brochures and presentations, writing text for articles, and designing interpretive panels focused on wildlife and natural resources.

    Primary trail duties include collecting GPS data on trail system and associated recreational assets, creating trail maps and list of trail repairs, performing routine trail clearing, organizing and directing volunteer crews for trail maintenance. Additional duties include field support of other natural resource programs: recreation, botany, wildlife biology and park operations.

    Office is located on the north end of Cottage Grove Reservoir, located about 30 minutes south of Eugene, OR. Field work is concentrated at 9 of 13 lakes in the Willamette Valley, but day travel to all lakes may be possible.

    Outreach and Trail Intern may take online ESRI ArcGIS training at no charge. First Aid and CPR training will be provided. Additional on-the-job training in outreach, trail maintenance, botany and wildlife monitoring.

    There are numerous recreational opportunities in the area including hiking, camping, bicycling, boating, fishing and rafting. Just over a one-hr drive to either the Cascade Mountains or the Pacific Coast.
