  • Responsibilities

    The South Texas Refuge Complex (STRC) protects 200,000 acres in extreme southern Texas, comprised of Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, and Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.

    This position will be involved restoration of natural areas, focusing on creating Monarch habitats in multiple communities within the region of the South Texas Refuge Complex. The position will: collect seed and propagate native plants for creating a seed plot and for use in schoolyard and pocket parks in the region; work with local high school to create a milkweed and nectar seed increase plot; coordinate and create 20-25 patches of Monarch habitat in the cities neighboring the three refuges; co-load 1-2 workshops in partnership with a local school district to share information and engage other individuals and community members in Monarch and pollinator conservation efforts. This position will work with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service personnel experiences in growing native plants, restoring habitat, developing workshops, and creating schoolyard habitats or pocket parks.

    Other duties may include miscellaneous tasks, as needed, to support the Restoration Program and Community Engagement and Partnerships Program of the South Texas Refuge Complex. The intern will work a compressed schedule, 9-hour days Monday through Friday with alternating Fridays off. Intern will operate government-owned vehicles during work hours, for official use only.

    Intern must provide personal transportation for travel to and from housing site to Refuge headquarters and for other personal use. Intern must have a valid driver’s license.
