The Hiawatha National Forest is home to 6 congressionally designated wilderness areas. The forest is recruiting for two summer interns to assist in wilderness recreation site mapping. Two interns would work as a team for eight weeks to document all observable impacts from recreation use within the forests wilderness areas (4 on the East Unit of the forest and 2 on the West Unit).

The interns will spend 3-9 days at each wilderness area taking a census of all likely recreation-use sites. Using the National Site Monitoring Protocol, interns will measure the average impact score and campsite density. Each site will be GPS'ed, photographed, recorded and entered into a database. The information collected will be analyzed and used to determine if current conditions are compliant with desired conditions.

Interns will report to the East Unit Raco, MI workstation for the first five weeks and may (depending on workload) report to the West Unit Munising, MI office for the remaining three weeks. While on the East Unit of the forest, housing will be provided in Sault Ste. Marie (approximately 30 minutes from Raco). While on the West Unit, forest service barracks or a hotel will be provided. Interns will have a Forest Service vehicle to drive to and from the field. Overnight camping in wilderness will occur. GPS skills and navigating in remote areas is required.

Housing on the East Unit of the Hiawatha National Forest will be a one bedroom apartment at Lake Superior State University located in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. This is a furnished apartment however, kitchen supplies (pot and pans, plates, utensils) are not provided. Linens are not provided so bring your own (towels, sheets). There is an on-site laundry facility. Interns will be expected to fill out and sign a housing application and summer housing agreement. Housing on the West Unit may be in Forest Service bunkhouse or in a hotel.
