  • Responsibilities

    Position Purpose:

    The Equestrian Staff purpose is to further the mission of camp through the engagement of the horseback riding facilities, horsemanship, and general equine care.

    Essential Job Functions:

    1. Always maintain high standards of health and safety in all responsibilities including by not limited to, cleaning stalls, attending to campers, teaching lessons, horse care etc.

    2. Participate as a member of the equestrian staff team to help plan, direct and assist camp programs and functions.

      • Work with the Riding Director to follow the program and training curriculum, rank book, certifications and awards.
      • Assist in the planning and management of special events on or near the horseback riding area.
      • Participate in all equestrian staff meetings.
    3. Assist in all proper horse care, safety, and maintenance during the summer.

    4. Plan, direct, and assist in safe operations at the barn.

      • Write (with assistance) lesson plans that meet camp goals.
      • Evaluate riding abilities of campers.
      • Deliver creative riding program activities.
      • Evaluate the success of the program and make suggestions for the following seasons.
    5. Help all Equestrian Staff.

      • Assist and participate in the planning and implementation of staff development.
      • Assist all equestrian staff in their horseback riding responsibilities.
      • Follow schedule and assist all staff to provide a safe and high-quality program at all times throughout the program.
    6. Assist in management and care of physical facilities and equipment at the barn and in the riding program

      • Assist in setting up a horseback riding area prior to lessons.
      • Teach and monitor proper use of equipment.
      • Conduct daily checks of area and equipment and supplies when needed.
      • Check equipment and make (or file for) repairs.
      • Conduct initial and end-of-season inventory.
      • Assist in packing all materials and supplies at the end of the season, breaking down the barn, and putting equipment away for storage. This is to be approved before leaving by the Riding Director.
      • Review and assist in the horses’ daily care, specifically reviewing for health needs, behavior issues, and tack needs and report these to the Riding Director.
    7. Participate enthusiastically in all additional camp activities as assigned.

    Equipment Used:

    The Equestrian Staff must have knowledge of the equipment pertaining to Riding and the Barn. She must also have knowledge regarding first aid equipment and including but not limited to other Riding and Barn programmatic equipment. Additionally, Equestrian Staff may be asked to use fire protection equipment, washer and dryers, dishwashers, and other specialty equipment around camp. Some may be asked to drive vehicles.

  • Qualifications
    • Current certification in horseback riding or documented experience caring and riding horses.
    • Current CPR and first aid certification by date of employment
    • Prior documented equestrian experience similar to camp is preferred.
    • Experience in other equestrian programs is desirable.
  • Desired skills
    • Effectively communicate in both verbal and written communications
    • Work with and have patience for children for up to 24 hours a day ensure the safety and wellbeing of children under your care for up to 24 hours a day; be comfortable and work effectively in an outdoor or natural setting; make decisions in high-stress situations; function and thrive in a community with very little personal space; live and work with other people up to twenty-four (24) hours a day
  • Compensation
    $300-$500/ week

    Room & food provided for position. This position is seasonal. Late May through Early August.

    Full Summer Commitment and Support Staff Merit Bonus

    • $500
    • Eligible for Youth Development Counselors, Equestrian Staff, and Support Staff who work all 3 sessions, fulfill their job responsibilities, and fulfill their original work agreement.

    Recruiting Bonus

    • $175/full summer or $50/session individual recruited
    • Only eligible if recruited employee completes a full summer work agreement.
