    We are looking for the BEST of the best staff to work at one of the most fulfilling and admired camps in the country. Activity Instructors have the opportunity to care for and work with children and help inspire campers to become exceptional people. Marimeta activity instructors will lead activities during the day to campers, and work with cabin counselor staff around camp. Activity Instructors take part in the evening program with the campers – this is where some of the best lessons in leadership, resilience, teamwork and confidence are made! Being an activity instructor is hard work and is extremely demanding, and it is bound to be the job you talk about most throughout your life because overcoming those demands and working that hard for these kids is extremely rewarding; just ask any of our staff.     General Responsibilities

    • Attend staff training and orientation program as well as weekly staff meetings.
    • Instruct campers during activity periods.
    • Take the lead on activity set up, evening programs, and other special events.
    • This is a round-the-clock job for 9 weeks. While you will live in specialty staff housing, and so will have some personal space and time, our days start at 8am and go until 9:00pm.
    • This job requires stamina; both physically and emotionally.

    Specific Responsibilities

    • Interaction with Children
      • Get to know every camper well and respond to them as an individual
      • Work to assure a quality camp experience for every camper
      • Develop an appropriate counselor/camper relationship with every camper
      • Be a quality role model for children
      • Be able to encourage, support and set limits for children
      • Be aware and effectively address the group and social dynamics of campers
    • Basic Care
      • Be safety conscious at all times
      • Make sure that every camper's basic needs are met
      • Be aware of the campers’ physical and emotional health
      • Maintain general cabin cleanliness
      • Teach children to develop good self-care and independent living skills
    • Program
      • Help facilitate quality daily activities throughout each session
      • With co-counselors, create and facilitate age appropriate cabin activities
      • Enthusiastically participate in all camp programs including: special events, color wars, general activity, etc.
    • Administrative Duties
      • Complete all required paperwork (e.g. parent letters, weekly self and cabin evaluations) on time
      • Abide by the time off/cabin on-duty schedule. One staff member from each cabin is required to be present in the cabin all times campers are present (you will use a rotating schedule with co-counselors)
      • Help ensure each camper writes home on a regular basis
    • Staff Professionalism
      • Embody camp values; doing the right things for the right reasons.
      • Prepare for, accept, and deliver feedback and constructively problem solve during supervisory conversations and co-counseling meetings
      • Set a good example for campers and others including: cleanliness/hygiene, punctuality, sharing clean-up and chores, being a good teammate.
      • Follow camp staff rules related to smoking, use of alcoholic beverages and drugs
      • Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities
      • Maintain a proactive, confident and positive attitude
      • Ask for help from appropriate staff when needed

    Counselor skills we need and provide training for:

    • Lifeguards
    • Swim instructors
    • Ski boat drivers
    • Sailing Instructors
    • Tennis teachers
    • Arts and crafts specialists
    • Climbing + high ropes course instructors
  • Qualifications
    • Desire and ability to work with children and staff outdoors, in a remote, rustic setting.
    • Must relate well to children ages 7-15, co-counselors, supervisors.
    • Ability to independently problem solve; having the attitude of “let me try to fix this first” is what we are looking for
    • Ability and willingness to assist in teaching an activity
    • Possess good character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, self-control, and responsibility
    • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating at camp (generally age 7 – 15 years for campers and 17 years and older for staff) of all skill levels, and provide necessary instruction to campers.
    • Ability to accept supervision and guidance
    • Be physically able to accompany the campers to any of the camp activities
    • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
    • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity, as well as physical symptoms of camper injury or illness, and camper concerns.
    • Cognitive and communication abilities to plan and conduct activities to achieve camper development objectives.

    Dates:

    Our sessions are four weeks or eight weeks long. We have between 160 and 180 campers each session.

    • Staff dates are June 11 - August 10, 2023
      • June 11 - 19 Staff Orientation and Training
    • June 19 - August 9 - Eight weeks
      • June 10 - July 14 (First session)
      • July 14 - 16 (Visiting Weekend)
      • July 16 - August 9 (Second session)
  • Compensation
    Salary for the summer begins at $2350 and is dependent on age and experience. In addition, you will be provided housing, food, and in-camp medical attention, internet and the use of camp facilities and equipment (when not being used for activities/programming).
