Whether its ending mass incarceration, achieving full equality for the LGBT community, establishing new privacy protections for our digital age, or preserving the right to vote or the right to have an abortion, the ACLU takes up the toughest civil liberties cases and issues to defend all people from government abuse and overreach. OVERVIEW The ACLU is one of the nations largest advocacy organizations, though it is better known for its success in the nations courtrooms. The National Political Advocacy Department (NPAD) was created in 2015 to strengthen the work of the ACLU at the federal, state and local levels of government. This new department is harnessing the political power that comes from having more than one million members and supporters, as well as affiliates in every state. By organizing grassroots lobbying and issue campaigns using modern tactics, the ACLU seeks to achieve change as profound in the legislative arena as it has accomplished through the courts. The NPAD includes the ACLU federal office in Washington, DC and staff based in the national headquarters in New York City who support the advocacy work of the ACLUs 53 affiliates. The Washington Legislative office lobbies Congress, federal agencies and the White House. Advocacy staff advises affiliates on policy, draft bills and talking points, design lobbying and issue campaigns, and provide advice on methods of public education and coalition building. The Director of the NPAD leads a staff of 60 people including federal lobbyists, state advocacy advisors and issue campaign strategists. The Director works with ACLU senior staff to set legislative strategy. INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW Interns will have the opportunity to support the ACLUs policy advocacy work on police practices. They will assist in NPADs efforts in researching and analyzing state legislation and legislative amendments, preparing advocacy and public education materials, and researching legal and policy issues related to state legislation. There will be opportunities to attend and observe substantive meetings, events, and conversations on policing reform and broader ACLU work. The internship position is based in the ACLUs New York City headquarters and is supervised by the Policing Policy advisor. The ACLUs National Political Advocacy Department seeks an Undergraduate/Graduate intern for the Spring of 2019.The internship is part-time with weekly hours that are negotiable and typically require a 10-12 week commitment beginning on January 14, 2019. A modest stipend is available for those students who do not receive outside funding and/or course credit. Arrangements can be made with the students school for a work/study stipend or course credit. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Interns will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working alongside an interdisciplinary advocacy team on the following policing-related areas: -Conducting police reform research and analyzing state legislation and advocacy efforts as they relate to policing -Drafting memoranda and other communications to ACLU state affiliates; preparing advocacy and public education materials -Providing research and drafting support for national policing reform reports -Tracking policing reform issues and initiatives on news media, social media, and the web; drafting and coordinating regular internal communications to keep staff up-to-date -Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts -Other duties as assigned EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS -Demonstrated interest in social justice work -Excellent research, writing, analytical and communication skills -Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and conducting internet research -The ability to work independently and to complete projects -Highly motivated and organized -Commitment to the mission of the ACLU HOW TO APPLY Please send a cover letter and resume toHRJobsNPAD@aclu.org.
