    POSITION OVERVIEW

    The Pacific West Region (PWR) includes more than 60 national park sites within California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, portions of Arizona and Montana and the territories of Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

    The individual selected will be creating and sustaining a culture of safety for parks in the PWR. The intern will coordinate with park safety professionals to consolidate and institutionalize region-wide safety program. The intern will share information, contacts, training, and tools to ensure that technical and professional advice is provided to NPS unites in the region. The intern will conduct audits, incident investigations, and provide field guidance and support.

    The intern will help promote occupational health and safety programming within the PWR, which will contribute to efforts to reduce the potential for injuries to those working in and visiting national park units. Additionally, this intern will also work collaboratively with the Regional Youth Programs Coordinator to evaluate and improve 21st Century Conservation Service Corps partners’ safety standards and reduce hazards.

    Work is performed primarily in an office setting in a large downtown city location with public transportation services nearby. Travel may be required for site and resource orientation, fieldwork, analysis of resources, site conditions and inspections, meetings with park staff and other agencies and groups, public meetings, and other purposes.

     

    MAJOR DUTIES 

    Key tasks that will be learned and/or worked on in conjunction with safety professionals in the regional safety, health, and wellness program:

    • Produce a site visit trip report
    • Assist with safety program reviews
    • Develop/improve a Safety, Health and Wellness Handbook and/or Plan for the Volunteers-in-Parks Program
    • Review policies and directives, and interview program and field staff to identify gaps in safety standards and Parks safety programming needs
    • Assist in the creation of webinars, safety shorts, training/marketing development, and model programs tools as needed
    • Reviewand audit 21stCCSC Partners’ workers’ compensation records
    • Ensure that website messaging and content is consistent.
    • Develop best practices for the NPS to partner and recruit from universities that offer safety, health and wellness programming degrees in order to provide a professional continuum for Safety, Health, and Wellness fields.
    • Perform other duties as assigned. Other duties may include shadowing Safety managers and engineers in the workplace or on-assignment in a park location.

    This position will include site visits to parks based upon field needs and project priorities. 

     

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS 

    • Must be a US Citizen, National or legal resident 
    • Possess or be able to obtain a Social Security Card
    • Able to pass a Federal Background Check
    • Must submit a mid-term and final report during term of service
    • Possess basic computer skills (particularly Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Suite) and the ability to learn new programs
    • Ability to work independently; take initiative
    • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities
    • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals by phone and email

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

    • Candidates with Coursework related to engineering, safety, industrial hygiene, environmental safety and health, risk management, and/or wellness.
    • Certifications in industrial hygiene, safety, safety management, public health, or risk management. Field experience in applying principles of risk management, incident investigations, data collection, and/or hazard assessments.
