Water Technician Intern
Position Details:
Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, Tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge (NWR, Refuge) are seeking an intern who will assist with water management and measurement at Arapaho NWR, compile data and assist with mandatory written reports, and engage in water infrastructure maintenance and replacement projects across the Refuge.
Position Responsibilities will include:
● Weekly water measurement through flume staff gauge readings and other measurement tools (FlowTracker 2).
● Reporting and compiling data in appropriate databases and reports.
● Working with regional hydrologist on improvements to water measurement process.
● Assist with habitat management through opening and closing of water control structures around the Refuge.
● Assist with water infrastructure maintenance and replacement projects.
● Potentially travel to USFWS Lakewood Regional Office and/or other field stations, such as the San Luis Valley NWR Complex to assist with projects similar to those above.
● Assist other Refuge staff with water related projects or, if time/interest allows, participate in habitat or wildlife related surveys or other aspects of Refuge management to learn more about the National Wildlife Refuge System as a whole.
Minimum Requirements:
● Possess a current driver's license and have clean driving record.
● Willing to undergo and pass a required criminal history check.
● A strong interest in a career in natural resource conservation science.
● You must be eligible to serve in AmeriCorps State & National Direct Service programs (must not have served more than 4 terms in AmeriCorps).
● You must be available to work a 40-hour week for the 26-week term
● You must be between 18 and 34 years of age.
● You must have received a High School Diploma or GED
● You must be a member of a Federally recognized Indian Tribe, Band, or Village; Alaska Native; or meet one of the following descriptions:
o Persons who possess at least one-half degree Indian blood derived from Tribes Indigenous to the United States.
o Descendants of Members of Federally recognized Indian Tribes, Bands or Communities who were residing on any Indian Reservation on June 1, 1934 – shown by completing BIA Form 4432.
** Preferred Qualifications: **
● Experience with Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams, etc.
● Previous experience with GIS and mapping applications, specifically field tools such as Survey123, Field Maps, onX, Google Earth, Avenza Maps, etc.
● Ability to work in all field conditions such as undesirable weather (heat, cold, wind) and difficult environments such as flooded meadows, thick mosquitoes, and intense sun at an elevation over 8,000 feet.
● Experience with 4WD vehicles and ability to change tires and avoid getting stuck in difficult terrain.
● Comfort working independently in remote field settings.
● Basic interest in water rights issues.
● Excellent ability to communicate, provide updates, and get along with a diverse team of Refuge staff and volunteers, as well as comfort in a shared bunkhouse setting.

● Housing will be provided at a shared federal bunkhouse in Walden, CO.
● Training in water management and measurement practices, data analysis, and required reporting to the State of Colorado with opportunities to participate in and learn about litigation and water disputes.
● Opportunities to meet and network with other USFWS and Partner entity staff and learn about NWR management.
● Training in water measurement techniques, equipment and installation of water gaging instrumentation.
● Training in basic surveying techniques using transect or laser level.
