The AFRL Aerospace Systems Directorate seeks to hire an Associate Research Chemical Engineer, DR-0893-01, in the Turbine Division (RQT), Fuels and Energy Branch (RQTF) at Wright-Patterson AFB, in Dayton, Ohio.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
- Conduct pioneering research; exploratory development; and related technical and support activities in high-performance aviation fuels with oversight from supervisor and lead scientist/engineer/principal investigator/program manager.
- Uses judgement and originality to identify solutions in a wide variety of technical and programmatic challenges of interest to future and current United States Air Force technologies.
- Works collaboratively within multifunctional teams, both internal and external to the organization, to plan, solve, execute, and communicate (oral, visual, and written) difficult fuels related problems while providing technical insight to various research efforts consistent with organizational guidance.
- Support research through the planning, designing, building, and maintaining of research rigs, apparatus, laboratory facilities, and equipment.
- Conduct research support activities including but not limited to business processes, logistics, security, and/or safety activities.
- Pivot and capitalize on technical knowledge when changes occur in technology demand signals from organization leaders.

Required Qualifications:

- Education:
- Chemical Engineer 0893: Professional science or engineering (S&E) degree from an ABET accredited academic institution in chemical engineering.
- Must have, or be able to obtain and maintain, a Secret Clearance.
- This is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position requiring Level/Tier 2 (Practitioner) certification in the Engineering & Technical Management stall.
Applicants must list all completed APDP certifications on resume (if applicable). Selectee will have 5 years to meet the APDP certification requirements of the position.
Desired Qualifications:
- Ability to work in multi-faceted teams (technical and others) to achieve complicated goals in in-person, virtual, and hybrid environments.
- Demonstrated oral and written communications skills in the communication of technical information to various types of audiences (technical and non).
- Proficient in chemical laboratory skills.
- Experience with planning, designing, building, and maintaining rigs, apparatus, equipment, or similar types of systems.
- Experience with programing (PLC programming; LabVIEW / iFix / LookOut / MATLAB Simulink / Visual Basic; Python; VBA; or similar languages) and data analytics.
- Proficient with hand tools and basic plumbing (tubing/piping up to 1” diameter); additional experience with electrical, mechanical (specifically pumps), and machining/fabrication is advantageous.
- Experience in collaborative development and writing project technical reports or peer-review articles.
- Familiarity with business processes, logistics, security, or safety activities.
- Experience working with aviation fuels or related technologies.
- Professional Military Education.
- Experience with programing (PLC programming; LabVIEW /iFix / LookOut / MATLAB Simulink / Visual Basic; Python; VBA;or similar languages) and data analytics
- Chemical lab experience
