Our vision is to lead our Nations back to ecological and cultural well-being by engaging underrepresented Indigenous youth and young adults in conservation service programs that reconnect participants to the land, their cultural heritage, and their traditions. We work to remove barriers to participation, education, and employment by partnering with local community organizations, agencies, and institutes of higher learning to create paid service and career training opportunities, personal and professional development, and pathways to postsecondary education and employment.

The National Park Service (NPS) preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The NPS cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.
NPS – Petroglyph National Monument Overview:
Petroglyph National Monument, established in 1990, is cooperatively managed by the National Park Service and the City of Albuquerque Open Space Division to protect and promote the understanding of petroglyphs in context with the cultural and natural features of Albuquerque’s West Mesa (Escarpment) and perpetuate the heritage of traditional communities connected to these landscapes. The monument contains the largest concentration of Rio Grande-style rock images in North America and was the first national park unit established specifically to protect petroglyphs.
With a human history of at least 10,000 years, Petroglyph National Monument encompasses countless landscape elements including petroglyphs, volcanoes, caves, archeological sites, human pathways, plants, animals, and vistas that have profound cultural and spiritual significance for 29 Pueblos and Tribes.
NPS – Petroglyph Tribal Community Ambassador Position Overview:
Monument staff are dedicated to working with Tribal officials and representatives on special projects, fulfilling the legal requirements of tribal engagement and consultation. It is more challenging to reach and engage with Tribal and Pueblo community members living in the urban areas surrounding the Monument, and in the towns and more remote regions in the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.
The Tribal Community Ambassador will engage with Tribal and Pueblo community members, schools, and organizations, to promote a wide variety of opportunities to visit and connect with the cultural and natural resources located within Petroglyph National Monument.
This position will also help provide professional development trainings and workshops for Indigenous youth conservation corps members working at the park, through the Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps and other similar programs. The Tribal Ambassador will help connect these members to jobs with NPS and other federal agencies by conducting resume and federal resume building, navigating USAJobs, and other similar workshops. These will also be open to Indigenous community members interested in working with NPS.
This position will work with NPS staff to broaden outreach to include Indigenous people and diverse communities in Albuquerque and across the region and will promote opportunities for Indigenous people to visit the monument and attend or present special programs. The individual will organize special events, site visits, community walks, and programs, help coordinate and participate in visits by Tribal officials, key staff, and Tribal Elders; and seek opportunities to work and partner with Indigenous organizations. They would work with NPS Resource and Interpretive staff to assist on Tribal site visits support planning and implementations of special events like an Indigenous Families Day, Native Health Initiative Trail Runs, and events in honor of Native American Heritage Month.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
With the support of a Petroglyph National Monument supervisor the Tribal Community Volunteer Ambassador will assist with the following project elements:
The individual will develop an outreach plan to improve on and off-site engagement with local and regional Tribal and Pueblo community members, schools, and organizations, to promote a wide variety of opportunities to visit and connect with the cultural and natural resources located within Petroglyph National Monument. The individual will develop connections with Community members to increase representation of the Monument in off-site events and increase participation in Monument activities such as guided walks, demonstrations, and programs. Part of this work includes developing relationships with community members, organizations, schools, developing mailing lists, connecting through newsletters/emails, etc.
The Tribal Ambassador will orient to the park, ALCC program mission and vision, and their position. They will help plan and implement a Native American Heritage event and support the Native Health Institute /Running Medicine special events. They will work with local schools and organizations to plan at least two events connecting Indigenous youth to the park through Play/Learn/Serve Days and will plan and support the Indigenous Families Day in Spring/Summer 2024 as a capstone project for their term.
The individual will organize special events and programs, Tribal demonstrations and workshops, and help coordinate and participate in visits by Tribal officials, key staff, and Tribal Elders; and seek opportunities to work and partner with Indigenous organizations. They would work with NPS Resource Staff to assist on Tribal site visits. They will also assist with visitor programs and operations at the Monument Visitor Information Center.
Required Skills
Required Experience
A combination of work (lived experience) and education (equivalent of bachelor's degree) with a strong background in community engagement, partnership development, written communication, team building, and problem-solving skills will be used to evaluate qualified applicants.
It is not expected that prospective candidates have experience in all these areas. An interest in developing these skills and some experience through work and/or education in at least one of these areas is required.
