    The University of Montana invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in the Department of Native American Studies to begin August, 2023.  We are seeking someone who can contribute to the core curriculum in Native American and/or Indigenous Studies. The department welcomes scholars whose teaching and research interests address socially significant issues facing indigenous communities globally through interdisciplinary scholarship in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and/or STEM fields. We especially welcome applications from scholars from populations historically underrepresented in the academy, and/or with extensive experience working with students or communities from diverse backgrounds. The ideal candidate will have a clearly defined program of research and a record of excellence in teaching at the college level, both face-to- face and online, who can contribute towards building an equitable, diverse, and inclusive academic environment. Teaching responsibilities typically include five courses per academic year consistent with department needs and the applicant’s area of expertise. Applicants should explain how their research and teaching complement the core curriculum of the department.

     

    The successful candidate will become a vital member of the NAS program and the Payne Family Native American Center on UM’s Mountain campus in Missoula, which also houses the American Indian Governance and Policy Institute, the Elouise Cobell Land and Culture Institute, and American Indian Student Services. Responsibilities of the appointee will include (1) regular teaching of Introduction to Native American Studies and other courses required for the major (e.g., Native American Beliefs and Philosophy or Tribal Sovereignty) as well as courses in the candidate’s area of specialization; (2) maintaining an active research agenda in Native American and/or Indigenous Studies; (3) mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in NAS. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to the newly established graduate program in Native American Studies.

     

    Qualifications

    Minimum

    • The candidate should hold a doctorate (or international equivalent) in Native American Studies or in a related area (degree requirements expected to be completed by August 20, 2023).
    • Any discipline is welcomed, provided the scholarly focus reflects a primary commitment to Native American and/or Indigenous Studies.
    • Experience developing pedagogic curriculum for as well as teaching in the field of Native American Studies.

     

    Preferred

    • A record of scholarly and/or creative
    • A strong commitment to teaching at the college
    • An ability to develop student-centered learning experiences leveraging face-to-face, online, and hybrid pedagogies.
    • A record of engagement with Native American reservations, communities, and organizations, ideally in Montana or the Northwest U.S.
    • An ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff in an academic

     

    Compensation

    Salary floor: $70,000 for the Academic Year (10 months). Salary will be at the Assistant Professor level, negotiable, and commensurate with the candidate’s experience and credentials. Opportunities for collaboration across campus include the American Indian Governance and Policy Institute, the Cobell Land and Culture Institute, the PEAS Farm (which contains a Four Sisters Native Garden), the Margery Hunter Brown Indian Law Clinic, and the Indigenous Research and STEM Education (IRSE) Program, among others. The University, the College of Humanities and Sciences, and the Department of Native American Studies will help facilitate these potential collaborations.
