$19.98 - $28.23 an hour DEFINITION Performs a variety of
para-professional traffic engineering field and office research,
analysis and records maintenance; designs and modifies traffic control
devices; develops recommendations for coordinating traffic improvement
projects. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the entry-level
classification in the para-professional Traffic Investigator series.
Incumbents perform routine, basic traffic investigator support duties
and are considered to be in training. As experience is acquired,
incumbents perform with increasing independence. Assignments are
generally limited in scope and within a procedural framework established
by higher level personnel. Assignments are observed and reviewed both
during performance and upon completion, and changes in procedures or
exceptions to rules are explained in detail as they arise. The
classification is distinguished from Traffic Investigator II by the
greater complexity of assignments and level of independent decision
making required of the Traffic Investigator II classification. ESSENTIAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Depending upon assignment, duties may
include, but are not limited to, the following: * Prepare illustrative
graphics such as charts, graphs, maps and other materials for reports. *
Deploy radar display trailers. * Attend community meetings. * Conduct
traffic studies and surveys such as turning movement counts, radar speed
surveys, and pedestrian studies. * Investigate traffic complaints and
requests for traffic controls. * Make preliminary recommendations
regarding corrective traffic control to mitigate traffic problems. *
Prepare written reports and correspondence. * Maintain accident reports.
- Write citations related to violations of street use. * Interpret a
variety of government references, i.e., City Codes, California Vehicle
Code, California Traffic and Design Manual, etc. * Perform related
duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: * General methods and
techniques of traffic data research and collection. * General traffic
rules, regulations, and ordinances. Ability to: * Interpret data, maps,
plans, and specifications. * Collect, record, and interpret field and
study data. * Use computer software to analyze and present data. *
Communicate effectively orally and in writing. * Establish and maintain
effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work. *
Maintain and prepare accurate records and reports. * Present data
graphically. EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION One year of experience with the
City of Sacramento performing work associated with explaining codes and
regulations to the public. OR A certificate of completion from an
accredited technical vocational school or community college in planning,
engineering, or a closely related field, or a minimum of 20 semester
units in college-level drafting and engineering related courses plus one
year of work experience involving customer service. All education
requirements must be verifiable from records or satisfactory completion
