Title: US Forest Service Recreation Technician

Start/End Date: May 29, 2023 – November 3, 2023

Stipend: $660/week paid on a bi-weekly basis

Reports To: San Juan National Forest Dolores Ranger District

Location: Dolores, Colorado

Status: 675 -hour AmeriCorps Service Term over 18 weeks

Benefits: AmeriCorps Education Award $2,474.27 after successful completion

Southwest Conservation Corps’ Mission

It is the mission of the Southwest Conservation Corps to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities, and the environment.

Program Overview:

The Southwest Conservation Corps’ Individual Placement team will help the US Forest Service carry out its mission of “caring for the land and serving the people.” These individuals will be a part of Recreation Program that oversees trails, roads, McPhee Reservoir, Lizard Head Wilderness, and other recreation facilities on the Columbine and Dolores Ranger District of the San Juan National Forest. The Recreation Program needs local talent that is interested in learning more about the multiple uses of our national forests. Local knowledge helps to educate other members of our communities about the Forest Service.

Essential roles and responsibilities include :

• Recreation maintenance projects
• Improvements to the local trail system and developed recreation sites
• Assist with meeting required Forest Service targets

Desired Skills/Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• No previous experience required
• Able to meet the standards required to operate professional and safely in arduous conditions

• Job Hazard Analysis
• Trail tool use
• Public outreach
• Wildfire awareness

Requirements:

• Must be able to lift more than 25 pounds, hike up to 6 miles a day in challenging terrain and weather conditions
• Must be able to work safely and effectively with a crew, follow crew boss directions as well as be independently prepared each day to work in a physically demanding position
• U.S. Citizenship
• Permanent Resident Card, INS form I-551
• Alien Registration Card, INS form I-551
• A passport indicating that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
• A departure record (INS 194) indication that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
• Valid Driver's License
• Per grant funding, candidate must be 18-30 years of age. Up to 35 years of age with veteran status
