    TITLE: ANCESTRAL LANDS - USDA FOREST SERVICE JEMEZ RECREATION AND RESOURCES CREW MEMBER (4 POSITIONS AVAILABLE)

    STIPEND: $400/week 

    TERM: JUNE 8TH, 2020 - AUGUST 21ST, 2020

    REPORTS TO: USDA Forest Service Santa Fe National Forest - Jemez Ranger District

    LOCATION: Jemez Springs, NM 87025

    STATUS: 300 - hour AmeriCorps Service Term

    BENEFITS: AmeriCorps Education Award $1,289.95 after each successful completion

     

    SOUTHWEST CONSERVATION CORPS’ MISSION

    It is the mission of the Southwest Conservation Corps to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities and the environment. The Ancestral Lands program is specifically designed to engage Native American youth and young adults with offices in Acoma, Durango, Gallup, Salida, Zuni, and Hopi. *ANCESTRAL LANDS SERVES LOCAL TRIBAL COMMUNITIES IN THE REGIONS WE OPERATE. APPLICANTS MUST BE NATIVE AMERICAN.

     

    PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

    The crew member will work with the Santa Fe National Forest / Jemez National Recreation Area to engage in conservation/recreation and cultural/heritage work on the Jemez Ranger District. Based out of the Walatowa Visitor Center, the crew members will learn job skills by support natural resource conservation and sustainable recreation on the National Forest.

     

    Essential functions and responsibilities:

    NATURAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION

    • Learn about and gain hands-on experience in resource conservation by working with specialists in fire, recreation, heritage, biology, and other resource areas to complete resource management projects aimed at protecting and promoting environmental resources and an enjoyable outdoor recreation experience to benefit rural communities and the public.
    • Specific projects include preparing fire lines and clearing roads for prescribed burns, installing fencing at recreation sites to prevent resource damage, assisting with habitat restoration and species monitoring in trout and New Mexico Jumping Mouse habitat, performing assessments, surveys, and fuel reductions at archaeological sites.

    SUSTAINABLE TRAIL MAINTENANCE

    • Learn drainage control techniques, out-sloping, and geographic design for modern, sustainable trails. Members will learn to use hand tools to clear and brush the trail, rebuild water bars and grade dips, and install directional signage along trails and informational signage at trailheads.

     

    VISITOR OUTREACH

    • Learn about "sustainable recreation" and gain valuable communication skills by interacting with the public and improving the customer experience for visitors. Crew members will promote sustainable recreation practices by making contact with visitors to educate them about the impacts of recreational activities on sensitive environments and cultural heritage sites.

     

    SODA DAM SIGNAGE

    • Learn about and aid the Jemez National Recreation Area in its current efforts to promote visitor enjoyment and safety at the popular geologic feature Soda Dam, while also protecting its cultural significance. Crew members will then develop language and photos for a sign at Soda Dam that describes the geology of the dam, provides a safety message that discourages visitors from climbing on the dam, and explains the cultural significance of the dam.

     

    GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

    The successful applicant must be reliable, punctual, and self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision after initial training and assignment of tasks. The applicant must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly. This includes frequently traversing uneven terrain and the ability to walk, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, reach, push, pull, and/or grasp in variable weather conditions and situations that may require a moderate amount of physical exertion. Applicant must have a visual acuity and valid license to operate motor vehicles and to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned. 

     

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • 21 years of age or older
    • High school graduate
    • U.S. Citizenship
      • Permanent Resident Card, INS form I-551
      • Alien Registration Card, INS form I-551
      • A passport indicating that the INS has been approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
      • A departure record (INS 194) indication that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
    • Valid driver’s license

    Candidates with trails, education, or science technician experience preferred, but not required.
