    POSITION DETAILS:

    Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIP, in partnership with the USDA Forest Service Alaska Region – Regional Office, are seeking a ANILCA Cabins Resource Assistant. The intern will be working for the Forest Service Alaska Region Special Uses Program, within the Recreation, Lands, and Minerals directorate. The mission of the Special Uses Program is to respond to requests for public uses (both non-commercial and commercial) of National Forest System lands. Specifically, the member will help ensure the public and agency are served by:

    • Compiling a concise and meaningful history of ANILCA Section 1303 cabins.
    • Helping the agency be good neighbors, by proactively managing cabins authorized by permit.
    • Strengthen the bond between Special Uses and Heritage functions by helping the agency anticipate future needs related to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

     

    Further, the member will strengthen the agency’s historic record by providing current and anticipated status of privately-owned cabins situated on public land. In so doing, the intent is to invite the member to learn various aspects of resource management, with the hope that he/she will ultimately seek employment with this agency – particularly in the field of Special Uses, where he/she will have ample opportunity to deliver public service and engage with the community of forest stakeholders.

     

    POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

    • Learn basic Special Uses policy and procedures.
    • Learn about ANILCA law, specifically section 1303.
    • Locate Special Uses files specific to ANILCA 1303 cabins.
    • Capture and display key management highlights from 1980 to present based on info gathered from files and/or conversation with permit administrators.
    • Develop a record of how many times each cabin permit has been transferred and to whom based on info gathered from files and/or conversation with permit administrators.
    • Develop a PowerPoint presentation of report findings.
    • Learn the basics of NHPA Section 106 through a combination of reading and conversation with archeology/heritage subject matter expert.
    • Within the record of cabin transfers, tag the cabins most likely to require archeologist review in the next 5-10 years, based on input by Special Uses Program Manager and Heritage Program Manager.
    • Identify any past archeology reviews that have been performed for each cabin based on file review and conversation with permit administrators.

     

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • Area of study: Any
    • Level of study: Current undergrad or grad student
    • Must be a US Citizen and/or be a lawful permanent resident
    • Must be minimum 18 years old

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Area of study: Public Administration, Natural Resource Management, and/or History
    • Ability to research and compose findings in a report

     

    BENEFITS:

    • Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $3,097.50 (pre-tax).
    • Living Allowance: $520/week (pre-tax)
    • Opportunity to learn about the functions of other subject matter experts within the directorate, including but not limited to: archeology, recreation planning & management, tourism, volunteer & partnerships, minerals & geology, wilderness management and realty.
    • Introduction to key personnel (forest program managers, archaeologists, and/or permit administrators who are familiar with the history of these cabins).
    • Receive informal overview of NHPA Section 106 and ANILCA law
