APPALACHIAN CONSERVATION CORPS:
The Appalachian Conservation Corps (ACC) is a non-profit, AmeriCorps-affiliated organization, whose mission is to connect young adults to meaningful conservation service. ACC engages motivated young adults, ages 18-27, to complete challenging and impactful conservation and service projects throughout the region. Projects may include, trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazardous fuels reduction, re-vegetation and local environmental service projects. Crews may also complete technical and/or specialized projects depending on project partner needs, including disaster relief if the opportunity arises. ACC crews work with a variety of land management agencies throughout the state such as the United States Forest Service, National Park Service and The Nature Conservancy. Projects vary but could include trail construction and maintenance, ecosystem restoration, habitat restoration, historical restoration, and boundary marking.
Our programs focus on place-based learning, life skills development, appreciation of diversity, civic responsibility and career development. ACC also provides an opportunity for corpsmembers to learn about the local environment, environmental issues and introduces individuals to recreation and resource management careers. When not in the field, members are expected to find their own housing.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Appalachian Conservation Corps’ Staff Crew Leaders perform many roles and are the key to our program’s success. The position is multi-faceted and demanding, but with opportunity for enormous rewards. Successful candidates will demonstrate resourcefulness, situational flexibility, effective communication skills, excellent judgement, maturity, initiative, professionalism, and the desire to devote themselves to a crew experience where the needs of others are placed above oneself. The Crew Leader position requires, mentorship, patience, technical aptitude, focus on efficiency, and a high level of comfort in the outdoors. Crew Leaders are ultimately responsible for successes and shortcomings of the crew.
This position will be joined by an AmeriCorps Crew Leader, an AmeriCorps leadership position focusing on the continued development of leadership skills. While this will be a collaborative relationship, the Staff Crew Leader bears ultimate responsibility for member development, as well as high quality and high quantity project accomplishments for our partners.

Required Skills Required Experience
Must have Engine (Gas & Diesel), Hydraulics, Electrical; Diagnose and repair malfunctions as needed; Utilize technical drawing and testing equipment; Obtain replacement parts, install and/or make repairs
Must be able to perform the following functions in variable weather and environmental conditions:
Bend, stoop, and crawl to work in tight, restricted spaces including fuel cells an aircraft belly areas.
Push, pull, lift, and parts and components weighing up to 60 pounds in the process of assembling, disassembling, repairing, or installation of these parts and components from a sitting, standing, bending, squatting, or overhead position.
Lift and carry tools and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
Drive vehicles weighing up to ten (10) tons (up to forty (40) tons in select assignments) in congested areas requiring good depth perception and ability to distinguish colors red, green, and yellow.
Work with color-coded wiring and other components which requires the ability to differentiate colors to include but not limited to red, green, yellow, blue, black, brown, white, and orange.
Operate a variety of tools, including power tools, in the process of assembling, disassembling, repairing, and installing parts and components while reaching, twisting, turning, and gripping.
Work in a high noise-level environment.
Read and interpret printed or computerized maintenance manuals, write legibly to complete forms/paperwork as required.
Must be able to regulate own work with little supervision and accomplish tasks on own.
Confer with Manager for complex repairs, which require approval.
Must provide own tools.
Reports to work on a regular and timely basis.
