POSITION DETAILS

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

SIPP in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Apprenticeship Program. This program provides young adults and post-9/11 military service veterans hands-on skills training from NPS professionals, focusing on the maintenance and care of monuments, memorials, and structures in the National Park Service system. Apprentices will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This program provides apprentices with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.

Salem Maritime and Saugus Iron Works National Historic Sites are part of the National Park Service. Salem Maritime preserves New England's maritime heritage through the properties along the waterfront of Salem, MA. The NPS also provides a regional visitor center for the North Shore of Massachusetts (located in the Salem Armory). Saugus Iron Works preserves a reconstruction of the first integrated iron works in colonial British North America as well as the founding of an industrial experience. The site is located in Saugus, MA, a suburb of Boston. Internships at both sites are located within the Facilities Management Division that oversees both park units

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

• Masonry, carpentry and painting techniques and tasks (including shipwright work) to preserve at-risk components of the historic-built environment.
• Grounds management within designed cultural landscapes including planting, paths, turf management and possibly arbor work.
• Preserving interior and exterior elements of historic buildings, fences, waterfront infrastructure, historic waterwheels, plaster and drywall, etc.
• Masonry techniques including brick path and wall repair and repointing, parging, setting stone, dry stack and form work.
• Carpentry skills including simple timber-framing, siding and trim replacement, deck framing and planking, design, and layout.
• Sailing vessel maintenance work and repairs, framing, painting and systems maintenance.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position, including occasional lifting or handling of objects over 75lbs using proper techniques.
• Standing or kneeling for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and/or be able to work in confined spaces.
• Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and walk in all manners of environmental conditions such as rain, mud, and extreme heat or cold.
• Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214
• Full vaccination against COVID-19 by the first day of employment and ability to provide proof of vaccination before starting

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• A career interest in building trade skills and/or historic preservation
• Is comfortable working outside in varying weather conditions and at heights
• Have a willingness to work hard and get dirty
• Have a serious attitude toward safety all day, every day
• Have the ability to think critically and creatively
• Have positive attitude
• Have ability to communicate effectively
• Have a professional and respectful manner and works well within a team
• Ability to commit to either a twenty-week experience of combined training and hands-on work
• Flexibility to work outside of traditional hours may be required
• Have the desire and ability to complete all program training requirements in order to receive NCCER and OSHA certifications including assessments and all classroom and online coursework.
