  • Responsibilities

    Following written routine protocols under minimal supervision, perform laboratory tests utilizing requisite lab equipment and instruments, making minor adjustments as required. Typically works with radioactive materials. Responsible for laboratory maintenance and solution preparation.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Perform independent method development as warranted.
    • Provide guidance and technical direction to less experienced Chemists.
    • Write and edit laboratory procedures as necessary.
    • Perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include various assays.
    • Operate requisite laboratory equipment and instruments; record data; maintain, troubleshoot and make minor adjustments to equipment.
    • Prepare solutions and reagents following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
    • Use universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers.
    • Comply with laboratory safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and radiological agents and/or biological sources in the workplace.
    • Use proper techniques to avoid contaminating laboratory samples and equipment.
    • Monitor inventory levels, order materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
    • Maintain required laboratory documentation.
    • Train personnel on laboratory procedures.

    • Ability to independently research invalid or inconclusive test results; implement resolution to affect positive results for test analyses. • Ability to prioritize and re-prioritize tasks. • Ability to work in a high-stress environment. • Ability to work as a team member. • Ability to perform multiple tasks at one time. • Ability to use computers and perform mathematical calculations for data reduction and other laboratory applications, including preparation of control charts. • Ability to read, understand and write laboratory procedures and organize work with minimal supervision. • Ability to train personnel on laboratory procedures. • Ability to hear and speak, to communicate in-person and over a telephone. • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions. • Ability to communicate and effectively interact with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public sufficient to exchange or convey information. • Ability to perform effectively under fluctuating workload conditions.

    Required Experience

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS;

    EDUCATION/TRAINING:

    BA/BS degree in Chemistry, Physical or Biological Science.  Equivalency consists of one of the following: A.S. degree in a Physical or Biological Science and 4 years laboratory experience or 8 years of laboratory experience.

     

    KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in a laboratory environment
    • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in an environmental laboratory.
    • Demonstrated experience using a GC/MS, ICP-MS, mercury analyzers, and/or Ion Chromatograph.
    • Advanced knowledge troubleshooting and maintaining laboratory equipment.
    • Thorough knowledge of concepts, practices and standard laboratory procedures, including safety procedures, in the laboratory environment.
    • Experience using a Laboratory Management Information Systems (LIMS).
    • Knowledge of Gamma Spectroscopy, Alpha Spectroscopy and Gas Flow Proportional Counting Methods and Data Review.
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
    • Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:     

    • Valid state driver’s license.

    • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check

    • Ability to pass OSHA HAZWOPER physical and use proper respiratory equipment.

    • Ability to pass random drug screens.

    • Must be available for additional work hours outside of the normal work schedule including holidays and weekends.

    • Must be able to travel as required.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Minimum of one (1) year radiochemical laboratory experience.
