    START/END DATE:  Early June, 2022 - Early October, 2022 (flexible

    STIPEND:  $570.00/week (+Education Award) 

    TERM:  18 weeks

    REPORTS TO:  Bureau of Land Management - Royal Gorge Field Office

    LOCATION:  Canon City, CO 81212

    STATUS:  675-hour AmeriCorps Service Term 

    BENEFITS:  AmeriCorps Education Award $2,417.14 after successful completion 

     

    SOUTHWEST CONSERVATION CORPS’ MISSION 

    It is the mission of the Southwest Conservation Corps to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities, and the environment. 

     

    PROGRAM OVERVIEW: 

     

    The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages public lands to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Recreation Program manages public lands for enhanced recreation experiences and quality of life, encourages sustainable travel and tourism development, establishes proactive travel management and planning, ensures public health and safety, improves the condition and accessibility of recreation sites and facilities, enhances visitor services including interpretive information and education, and encourages partnerships, volunteers, and citizen-centered public service. Recreation staff plan, implement, monitor, and maintain recreation areas and facilities to ensure that the public can safely and sustainably enjoy our public lands.

     

    These two individuals will work closely with BLM recreation staff to monitor visitation in busy recreation sites and build awareness of the area rules and regulations. The primary focus of the individuals will be to assist the recreation program in managing recreation areas with the Royal Gorge Field Office (RGFO) area. They will help educate visitors, perform fee collection, and be a presence to build awareness of rules and regulations across various sites and facilities on BLM-managed land. These individuals will also help educate visitors on Leave No Trace principles and ethic. Additionally, the individuals will also connect with local and regional community partners through volunteer events, trail work days, and collaborative trainings.

     

    Work may involve early morning hours, late afternoon hours, and will be expected to work holidays and weekends. A standard BLM uniform will be provided to wear while performing patrol and public contact duties. The intern must possess a valid driver's license to operate government vehicles and equipment.

     

    Essential roles and responsibilities include:

    • Assist visitors and monitor visitation at Guffey Gorge/Paradise Day Use Site

    • Develop skills as a general park ranger and patrol in recreation areas

    • Learn how to implement recreation area maintenance and operation plans, including with youth corps service member and volunteer groups

    • Provide information on the area and the reason for fee sites / rules and regulations to visitors at Guffey Gorge

    • Collect fees from the field and assist with counting fees for deposit

    • Patrol the site on foot, including hiking down to the pool and along the stream to engage with visitors and identify issues that may need correction.

    • Provide information and communicate effectively with BLM law enforcement rangers and county emergency services to allow them to safely perform their jobs

    • Learn RGFO recreation areas and general travel management maps for those designated areas

    • Represent the BLM in a professional attitude and appearance.

    • Show respect to visitors and provide information as needed

    • Become proficient at identifying issues that need attentions such as, missing signs, trash, and resource damage

    • Monitor busy recreation areas such as the Goldbest Scenic Byway and dispersed camping outside of Salida and Buena Vista

    • Check trails, signs and road for maintenance needs

    • Assist on large work projects and ensure volunteers complete work safely and effectively

    • Assist with maintaining trails, complete area clean ups, install fencing/kiosks, and rehab closed areas.

     

    DESIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS: 

     

    • Currently pursuing or completed degree in Natural Resources or related field preferred
    • Clean driving records and comfortability with navigating 4x4 roads (training provided)
    • Ability to hike long distances over rough terrain and able to operate OHVs (training provided)
    • Ability to work somewhat independently in initiating, developing, or modifying work methods
    • Ability to administer operations, such as day to day operation of a recreation site, which involves on-site decisions and judgements
    • Ability to provide clear information or data both orally and in writing, in order to provide advice and guidance to supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
    • Ability and knowledge to use basic tools for digging post holes, replacing damaged signs, and similar tasks
    • Spanish language skills would be beneficial

     

    The successful applicant must be self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision after the initial training period. The applicant must be able to maneuver and operate in a mixture of office and field work. This can include long periods of standing or walking on rough, uneven ground, bending, crouching, and stooping. Prior to starting this position, a government security background clearance will be required.

    REQUIREMENTS: 

    • High School Diploma or GED
    • U.S. Citizenship
      • Permanent Resident Card, INS form I-551
      • Alien Registration Card, INS form I-551
      • A passport indicating that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
      • A departure record ( INS 194) indication that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
    • Driver's License
    • Per grant funding, candidate must be 18-30 years of age
