The Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps has offices in Acoma, Albuquerque, Gallup (Navajo Nation), Zuni, and Hopi. Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps serves local Indigenous communities in the regions we operate.

This program is available to all, without regard to race, color, national origin, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender identity or expression, political affiliation, marital or parental status, genetic information, and military service. Where a significant portion of the population eligible to be served needs services or information in a language other than English, the recipient shall take reasonable steps to provide written material of the type ordinarily available to the public in appropriate languages.

Canyons of the Ancients National Monument:

Canyons of the Ancients is the homeland of 26 Associated Tribes and Pueblos. It is a living landscape where the cultural footprints and traditions of Indigenous communities spanning thousands of years are preserved within its ecosystem. The Monument was designated to protect this unique cultural and natural environment on a landscape scale. Canyons of the Ancients National Monument is part of the Bureau of Land Management’s National Conservation Lands System. Designated by Presidential Proclamation on June 9, 2000, Canyons of the Ancients National Monument encompasses 174,000 acres of BLM-administered public lands that contain the highest known archaeological site density in the United States, with rich well-preserved evidence of Native American cultures. The Monument is located in the Four Corners region of southwestern Colorado, about 50 miles west of Durango, 10 miles west of Cortez, and 12 miles west of Mesa Verde National Park. Visitors planning to explore the Monument should make their first stop Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum.

The archeological record etched into this cultural landscape is much more than isolated islands of architecture. More than 8,300 recorded sites reflect physical components of past human life: Villages, field houses, check dams, reservoirs, great kivas, cliff dwellings, shrines, sacred springs, agricultural fields, petroglyphs and sweat lodges—some areas have more than 100 sites per square mile. The number of sites is estimated to be as high as 30,000. This landscape has been inhabited by humans—including Ancestral Puebloan cultures—for at least 10,000 years and continues to be used by humans today. Contemporary uses include recreation, hunting, livestock grazing, and energy development.

NATIONAL LANDSCAPE CONSERVATION SYSTEM MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) is to conserve, protect, and restore nationally significant landscapes with outstanding cultural, ecological, and scientific values for the benefit of current and future generations.

ALCC Indigenous Researching and Mapping Individual Placement (IP) Overview:

The intern will be responsible for developing an interactive GIS map, a story map, and adding resources to the toolkit. This story map will be added to the toolkit for the Native Lands Mapping Project. These resources will help federal agencies that administer National Trails and their nonprofit trail organization partners advance National Trails System knowledge of Ancestral Lands and increase partnerships and collaboration with Indigenous Communities along National Historic Trails, such as the Old Spanish National Historic Trail. They will play an instrumental role in communicating with Indigenous communities associated with Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and nearby National Trails.

Native Lands, National Trails (NLNT) project

Native Lands, National Trails (NLNT) is a project that was created in collaboration with the Partnership for the National Trails System, Native Land Digital, Bureau of Land Management and Ancestral Lands Conservation Corp.

The Native Lands, National Trails Map is an interactive GIS map hosted through ESRI that serves as an educational tool and resource for understanding and navigating Ancestral Indigenous territories throughout the National Trails System (NTS). The NTS consists of 30 congressionally designated trails that traverse what is now the United States of America.

Many of these trails were used previously by Indigenous cultures that continue to have ancestral ties to the current landscapes. The intent of this map is to provide a broad perspective of just how many communities the NTS crosses and to start crucial conversations about the impacts, engagement, and inclusivity of their stories.

    Essential functions and responsibilities:.

1). Work with Native Lands and GIS professionals at Federal agencies to develop a geographic information system (GIS) overlay for the National Trail System Map in coordination with Native Land Digital (Native-Land.ca).

Maps will be made publicly available on Canyons of the Ancients National Monument’s website and on an interactive media display at the Visitor Center and Museum.

2). Add resources to toolkit to compliment the map to support Native Lands National Trails future mapping improvements.

    • Through outreach, provide feedback to the National Trails community and from Indigenous communities to help prioritize information and resources to be developed.

3). Document all contacts, materials, and processes used to create the map and resources for the toolkit.

    • Keep a database of all contacts, all state, federal, and tribal documents, processes, and research practices used in creating the map and toolkit.

4). Organize and lead in person and online presentations or trainings to promote use of the map and toolkit.
