  • Responsibilities

    Position Purpose: The Cook prepares food for campers and staff. A part of team leadership working together and striving for excellence in every aspect of dietary efforts each meal on a daily basis.

    Essential Job Functions:

    • Clean food preparation areas as determined by Servsafe regulations, as well as local and state laws and regulations.
    • Prepare foods to the specifications of campers.
    • Prepare food before the arrival of campers each meal.
    • Adjust food items to accommodate campers and staff with allergies or specific diet concerns.
    • Assist in teaching other kitchen employees how to prep for service of meal and entrée items. (i.e.: pizza).
    • Ensure proper food temperatures for food at service and during holding periods.
    • Season food according to recipes or company needs.
    • Present order form to kitchen manager for any items needed, (i.e.: spices, etc.).
    • Operate various kitchen appliances such as a blender, oven, grill, or stand mixer.
    • Portion, arrange, and garnish food based on the kitchen manager and cook’s preference.
    • Assist other cooks during the food assembly process.
    • Estimate expected food consumption and organize preparation.
    • Butcher and cooks meat based on the camp menu and direction from the Kitchen Manager.
    • Prepare any necessary sauces or accompaniments before meal service begins.
    • Clean up after meal periods and prep for next day meals, staying 2 days ahead.
    • Efficiently prepare meals and service, as the camp adheres to a family style service with a large buffet table for extra items for vegetarians and special items that incorporate leftovers that are still within a realm of quality and have not been compromised.
    • Consult with the kitchen manager regarding use of leftovers.
    • Work closely with the Kitchen Manager and Kitchen Supervisor to ensure all ordering, deliveries, and food preparation is done to be ready for service at 8:15 A.M., 1:15 P.M., and 6:15 P.M. meal periods, with ample supervision for each meal daily. The meal period the Cook is responsible for depends on a weekly schedule, subject to change.
    • Act as a positive role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
    • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
    • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.

    Other Job Duties:

    • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned if needed

    Equipment Used:

    Cooks may be asked to use fire suppression equipment, washer and dryers, dishwashers, and specialty kitchen equipment. Some may be asked to drive camp vehicles.

  • Qualifications
    • Previous experience as a line cook and Institutional cookery
    • Unless otherwise specified by directors, applicants must be at least 18 years of age and a rising college sophomore.
    • Current CPR and First Aid certifications during term of employment, preferred.
    • Serve Safe Certified.
    • Desire to work with all age levels outdoors and understand the development needs of youth. Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.
    • Ability to accept guidance and supervision while demonstrating good character, integrity, and adaptability.
    • Displays enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control consistently in the camp environment.
    • Successful completion of pre-employment background check and/or DMV background check.

    Physical Aspects of this Position:

    • Ability to communicate and work with groups (of varying age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers.
    • Ability to observe staff and camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate management/behavior management techniques.
    • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to activity.
    • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

    Some physical requirements of the Cook position include physical endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requirement for eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate program equipment and activities. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs. Must also have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering programs in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and exposure to various animals, plants, insects and environmental conditions.
