The Associate Development Writer is a key member of Earthjustices Donor Marketing & Engagement team, which is responsible for developing and implementing strategic events, trips, and communications that engage, cultivate, and steward major gift, principal gift, and public support donors of Earthjustice. Under the guidance and supervision of the Senior Development Writer, the Associate Development Writer is responsible for writing and editing donor materials that are informed, accurate, compelling, and consistent with the Earthjustice brand. These materials support Earthjustices ambitious fundraising efforts and convey impact and gratitude to the organizations supporters. Donor materials may include donor reports, proposals, program updates, event collateral, newsletters, fact sheets, brochures, presentations, invitations, donor trip materials, gift acknowledgements, email messages, talking points, and special web pages. Responsibilities: Writing, Editing, and Research (60%) * Under the supervision of the Senior Development Writer, research and review material prepared by frontline Development staff, Earthjustice attorneys, Communications staff, and Foundations officers to produce compelling written content. * Stay abreast of developments in program areas to keep written materials current and accurate. * Communicate with program staff to obtain complete, up-to-date information on their work and determine what information is appropriate to share with donors. * Monitor and meet publication deadlines in coordination with fundraising calendar. * Manage a heavy volume of writing and editing assignments on a variety of topics and with tight deadlines. * Edit and proofread written materials created by other Development and Communications staff. Program Knowledge and Communication (25%) * Become fluent in the work of Earthjustice regional offices, programs, and campaigns. * Track the status of legal cases and programs through program staff briefings, program area email lists, press releases, and other internal information sources. * Track daily environmental news reports and keep updated information on a wide array of environmental issues. * Develop a working knowledge of Earthjustices key past accomplishments and history. * Ensure that all produced materials are in line with the Earthjustice brand. General Responsibilities (15%) * Work with the graphic designer to produce attractive and appropriate donor collateral as needed. Make text corrections and help finalize print materials produced with Adobe Creative Suite. * Liaise with the Communications department in order to share information and collaborate on cross-departmental initiatives. * Attend departmental and organizational retreats for shared planning, team building, and professional development. * Additional duties as assigned. Qualifications: * Bachelors degree desired. * Three years successful experience as a writer/editor preferred. * Familiarity with spreadsheets, databases, and Adobe Creative Suite. * Familiarity with project management and workflow tools such as Basecamp, Trello, or Jira preferred. * Ability to synthesize complex legal and scientific material, translate it into compelling text, and communicate it clearly and succinctly. * Ability to develop and produce successful reports and other materials creatively. * Outstanding verbal and written communication skills. * Ability to prioritize work and perform effectively under the pressure of multiple deadlines. * Exceptional ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of people across the organization. * Interest in environmental and public health issues. * Journalistic, writing, environmental, and/or scientific background preferred. * Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations. * Contributes to the creation of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences.
