    POSITION DETAILS

    Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIPP in partnership with the National Park Service are seeking an intern who will assist with monitoring captive and wild California condors based at Pinnacles National Park.

     

    POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

     

    • Tracking, monitoring and recording condor movements, behaviors and interactions.
    • Observing and recording feeding behaviors.
    • Speaking with the public and local community members about a high-profile endangered species which is reliant on public and private lands and hunting and ranching operations for its recovery.
    • Monitoring breeding behavior and nests.
    • Handling animal carcasses used for bait stations.
    • Maintenance of equipment and facilities.
    • Other duties as assigned to gain experience with other work groups, such as habitat restoration and public education and outreach.

     

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • Between the ages of 21-35
    • US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident

     

     

     PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Great attention to detail and safe work practices.
    • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Interested in talking with the public.
    • Ability to hike up to 10 miles on steep and rugged terrain carrying 40+ pounds of equipment.
    • Tolerant of summer temperatures that can exceed 100 degrees F.
    • Prior experience with any of the following: endangered species or wildlife management, radio-telemetry, public speaking, basic maintenance or construction skills, 4x4 driving on primitive roads, and hunting or ranching operations.

     

    BENEFITS:

    • Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $3,047.50(pre-tax).
    • Living Allowance: $440/week (pre-tax) – housing is not provided on-site, so candidate must have own housing.
    • Will receive formal four-wheel drive training.
