    POSITION SUMMARY:

    Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps engages motivated young adults, ages 18 - 30, to complete challenging and impactful conservation and service projects throughout Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. Projects may include, trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazardous fuels reduction, re-vegetation and local environmental service projects.  Crews may also complete technical and/or specialized projects depending on project partner needs, including disaster relief if the opportunity arises. Each crew will consist of 3 members and 2 leaders. Crews work and camp for up to 8 days at a time in frontcountry and backcountry locations in all types of weather conditions. Schedule may vary depending on location and program. ALCC crews work in a variety of national parks, national forests and other areas throughout the Southwest. Crews prepare all their own meals and work together as a group to complete all the necessary chores. Our programs focus on place based learning, life skills development, appreciation of diversity, civic responsibility and career development. ALCC also provides an opportunity for Corpsmembers to learn about the local environment, environmental issues and introduces individuals to recreation and resource management careers.  When not in the field, members are expected to find their own housing.

     

    Required Skills

    PARTICIPANTS MUST UNDERSTAND THE NEED FOR:

    COMMITMENT – AmeriCorps members must make a strong commitment to complete all aspects of the program including conservation projects, education, training and national service.  Members must commit to participating in all crew activities, including service days in local communities.

    SAFETY - Members are required to establish and maintain a culture of safety on their crew during all program activities.

    PROFESSIONALISM – Participants must be willing to follow all AL policies, maintain professional boundaries, and appropriately represent Ancestral Lands  and AmeriCorps.  A*C CLDP participants are also required to be TOLERANT OF DIVERSITY; respecting the differences of others.

    TEAMWORK – Members must be willing to demonstrate teamwork and respect for others and a commitment to group decisions.

    TECHNOLOGY – The use of technology, including cell phones, iPods, MP3 players, and other battery powered devices is not allowed during all work, chore, group and meal times as well as during de-rigs and rig-up.  Members must agree to not use these types of technology while participating in these activities and must agree to help regulate this important AL  policy when in a leadership position.

    SUBSTANCE FREE – Participants MUST be willing and able to refrain from tobacco products, alcohol, and/or drugs while participating in the AL program.

     

     

     

    Required Experience

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: THESE QUALIFICATION ARE PREFERRED BUT WILL BE IMPLEMENTED THROUGH MENTORING FROM CREW LEADERS AND STAFF DURING THE DURATION OF THE PROGRAM

    • High School Diploma, GED, or commitment to acquiring GED while in program.
    • Willingness to commit fully to the program and its mission.

    • Flexibility, adaptability and capacity to work in a fluid, changing work environment

    • Willingness to learn and be a part of a dynamic community of peer leaders.

    • Must be adaptive, patient and able to maintain a positive perspective throughout.

    • Physically fit and able to work long days in adverse conditions

     

     ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Frequently required to walk, hike, sit and talk or listen

    • Required to use hands to operate objects, tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms

    • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

    • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and the ability to focus

    • Must be able to speak, understand, read and write English
