    Title: US Forest Service Watershed Crew

    Start/End Date: 6/12/2023 – 9/08/2023

    Stipend: $650/week (paid on a bi-weekly basis)

    Term: 13 weeks

    Reports To: US Forest Service Durango Watershed Program

    Location: Durango, Colorado

    Status: 450-hour AmeriCorps Service Term

    Benefits: AmeriCorps Education Award $1,718.25 after successful completion of term

    Southwest Conservation Corps’ Mission

    It is the mission of the Southwest Conservation Corps to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities, and the environment.

    Program Overview:

    The phrase, “Caring for the Land and Serving People,” captures the Forest Service mission. As set fourth in law, the mission is to achieve quality land management under the sustainable multiple-use management concept to meet the diverse needs of people. It includes advocating a conservation ethic in promoting the health, productivity, diversity and beauty of forests and associated lands. The individual will be directly involved in the on-going effort to enhance, improve and/or rehabilitate soils, water, and fishery needs on the San Juan National Forest lands. They will gain vast knowledge in natural resources applicable to land management as well as a diverse set of field skills in water management programs that include, hydrology, fisheries, soil science and air science.

    Essential roles and responsibilities include :

    1.) Gather hydrology data with Hydrologist

    • Work with watershed crew to determine data collection needs for future land management activities
    • Stream surveys involving field data collection that follow strict and accurate field measurement techniques
    • Parameters collected will include stream gradient, channel bed measurements, longitudinal profiles, and width, depth, flow measurements

    2.) Gather Fish Habitat Data with Fisheries Biologist

    • Work with watershed crew to determine data collection needs for future land management activities
    • Field work will include fish habitat surveys and data collection
    • Fish re-population work may include working with certified fish biologists who are certified to operate electroshocking equipment
    • Work may involve netting fish, recording data about fish, and/or working with certified fisheries professionals to re-stock streams with fish

    3.) Gather soil science data with Soil Scientists

    • Work with watershed crew to determine data collection needs for future land management activities
    • Field work will include soil disturbance monitoring protocol and data collection
    • Forest soil disturbance monitoring protocol addresses changes in soil organic matter and physical properties caused by land management activities
    • Data collection includes taking measurements at the soil surface and in the upper mineral soil for changes in soil quality

    Desired Skills/Qualifications:

    • Pursuing a college degree in Natural/Environmental Resources

    Training Provided:

    • Field training and data collection protocol training

    Potential Human & Environmental Risk:

    • Uneven terrain, wading in creeks and rivers, hiking off-trail/unmarked paths, slipper/wet conditions

    Housing Provided: No

    Requirements:

    • U.S. Citizenship
      • Permanent Resident Card, INS form I-551
      • Alien Registration Card, INS form I-551
      • A passport indicating that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
      • A departure record (INS 194) indication that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
    • Valid Driver's License
    • Per grant funding guidelines applicants must be 18-30 years of age, up to 35 if a veteran

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, graphic design, industrial design or related field.
    • 10 plus years of project management experience in the design, development and implementation of large scale experiential graphic design projects for a variety of clients and building types.
    • Prior experience with an architectural or graphic design firm in related role.
    • LEED credential required within 12 months of employment.
