Conservation Legacy / Public Lands Corps Position Description

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

This Conservation Fellow position is offered jointly by Conservation Legacy and the National Park Service. Conservation Legacy’s role is largely administrative, and the Fellow will work directly with the National Park Service. Candidates must be able to pass a federal background check to obtain an official personal identity verification (PIV) credential. Work schedule is 40 hours per week. Some travel opportunities will be available to work directly with NPS professionals stationed throughout the Region.

The National Park Service Natural Resources and Science Program (NR&S) for Interior Regions 8, 9, 10, 12 (legacy Pacific West Region) supports more than 60 national parks in California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, portions of Arizona and Montana, and the territories of Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Our NR&S Program advances the stewardship of natural resources in parks and beyond to leverage landscape-scale conservation. We support parks in policy direction and guidance, and technical assistance -- engaging the best available science and managing amid continuous change. The NR&S Program also coordinates with other disciplines at regional and national scales to meet crosscutting challenges to resource conservation and preservation.

The fellow will perform the duties below under the mentorship of NR&S staff:

Position Responsibilities:

· Support environmental compliance planning for the California Middle Mile Broadband project – a 2 year effort to bring high speed internet to rural and underserved populations state-wide.

· Take a leading role in the coordination of multi-park meetings for the purposes of information sharing, data gathering, and project communication

· On a regular basis, interface with partners and national, regional, and park subject matter experts via Teams meetings, phone, and email to gather and exchange information to plan/execute projects

· Support environmental compliance planning external review processes

· Work with program leads in the NR&S group on key issues and projects

· Be flexible and work efficiently in a remote work scenario

· Communicate your interests to supervisors and NR&S program leads so that opportunities for mentorship and career advancement can be maximized

· Work effectively both on a team(s) and independently to plan and carry out projects

Middle Mile Broadband Project (65%)

· Support conservation of NPS natural and cultural resources

· Coordinate with and assist project leads from other NPS branches (e.g. Planning and Compliance, Cultural Resources, Lands), as desired and/or needed

· Prepare for and help facilitate online meetings

· Summarize regional and park input into planning processes

· Prepare (or assist with the preparation of) maps, conceptual plans, and graphics using GIS and other software

· Conduct research, site analysis, and resource assessments

· Prepare notes from meetings and discussions

· Write project updates, reports and correspondence

**NR &S Program Support (20%) **

· Support regional staff in evaluating, mapping, and administering response to Federal Register notices and external projects that may impact natural resources at parks.

· Assist Regional Wildlife Biologist and Vegetation Ecologist with **** planning, coordination, and communication with parks on threatened and endangered species compliance

· Work with program leads in the NR&S group on key issues and projects that are relevant to parks and the regional office.

· Review compliance/planning documents and species status assessments as assigned

· Assist in other duties as assigned.

Conservation Fellow Development (10%)

· Conduct park field trips. Learn about Threatened and Endangered species recovery, habitat restoration and the latest issues facing NPS units.

· Work directly with NR&S professionals in fields including: Wildlife Management, Plant Ecology, Ocean and Coastal Resources Management, Energy & Minerals Development (protecting park natural and cultural resources), Air Resources, Natural Sounds and Dark Night Skies, Water Resources, Landscape Ecology, Geology, Natural and Cultural Resource Strategic Planning.

· Create Individual Development Plan with supervisor and implement aspects of the plan.

Science Communications (5%)

· Assist in science communication efforts across the Region for diverse external and internal lay audiences. ****

Minimum Requirements:

· Must be between 18-30 years of age

· US Citizen or Permanent Resident

Preferred Qualifications:

· Understanding of and interest in biological and/or physical sciences

· Strong communication and coordination skills

· Excellent information and data organizational skills

· Eager to learn and make a difference

· Independent, quick learner

· Familiarity with environmental planning, policy, and compliance

· Able to track and keep deadlines

· Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including ability to work in ArcPro and ArcGIS Online is a plus

• Possess creative talent in conceptual design and rendering skills of either hand or computer sketching.
• Advanced knowledge of design principles and the ability to interpret design concepts and layouts, including commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the profession.
• Knowledge of design, trends, construction methodology, materials application and manufacturer-supplier appropriateness.
• Advanced knowledge of furniture, fixture and equipment (FF&E), architectural/interior finishes, lighting, signage, art, and color schemes to carryout design intent.
• Knowledge of building regulations and safety codes.
• Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
• Thorough knowledge of sustainability, integrated design and LEED guidelines.
• Knowledge of buildingSMART, Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD).
• Proven ability to prioritize in order to meet deadlines and provide high quality service to clients.
• Proficiency in the basic technical skills of interior design including the following computer skills:
• Proficiency in 3D Modeling software such as Revit, Sketchup, Lumion, Enscape, TwinMotion and Rhino preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
• Proficiency in Affinity software suite preferred.
• Ability to effectively meet deadlines.
