Job Title: Apprentice Planerman Job Location: Darrington Job Description: To maintain a safe work environment for themselves and others. This job is located in the Planer area and is under the supervision of the Planer Supervisor, Head Planerman, and/or those designated by the Supervisor. Pay increases on skill levels within the time frame of the program The Apprentice Planerman position is intended to be a way to train employees within the company whose goals are to become a Planerman and eventually become a Head Planerman. The Apprentice Planerman is expected to make steady progress and follow the requirements of the program and of the company. The Apprentice Planerman must fill in for the swing shift Planerman as needed. Work with Head Planerman/ Planerman on maintenance projects. The Apprentice Planerman is required to bid on the swing shift Planerman position when it comes up for bid. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of current position and placed in next available entry level position. 1. Learn to feed planer the correct way to maximize the highest grade recovery while maximizing quality and throughput 2. Learn how to set-up planer before shift, during and after shift 3. Check lumber sizes continuously for sizes and skip 4. Learn what planer defects are and how to fix them 5. Do other jobs as directed and trained 6. Notify supervisor and/or those designated of any problems that might arise 7. Use lockouts when required 8. Be self-motivated and goal-oriented 9. Work some weekends and overtime to meet the needs of the operation 10. Learn to change top, bottom, and side head knives 11. Learn to change heads as needed 12. Learn to joint all heads as needed 13. Learn to grind heads 14. Learn daily, monthly and yearly maintenance procedures ( PMOs) 15. Maintain a clean workstation 16. Clean-up mill when not in production 17. Be a good communicator, good trainer and create a positive energy within the team Experience/Skills Required: Must be mechanically inclined and know all lumber sizes. Must take grading and Q.C. classes when available. Must learn to cut and weld within one year. JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. Practice safe work habits and comply with all company work and safety standards 2. Work closely with graders and learn to look for lumber defects while feeding to minimize planer hang-ups.
