Editorial Assistant Job Locations US-NY-New York Posted Date 2 days ago (11/19/2018 3:49 PM) # of Openings 1 Job Category Editorial Overview The Editorial Assistant is responsible for providing a wide range of administrative support for both the global Series and Trade publishing programs. This is also an editorial training role where the Editorial Assistant provides support to editors on their authors, providing first reads of manuscripts, revision notes, line-edits and packaging support. This role also provides a front-line contact for the Editorial team and assists in positively portraying the company to external sources. Responsibilities Completes first screen for all slush manuscripts and query letters submitted, identifies and forwards any that are determined to be worth further consideration. Collates editorial materials and coordinates transfer of materials to other company departments as required. Acts as front-line contact for the department by screening requests or messages from external parties such as responding to queries from authors/agents, unsolicited authors/agent calls, providing information when known or referring to the proper source. Provides administrative support to the department by maintaining internal scheduling systems and databases, proof-reading, photocopying required documents, generating reports, requesting materials, coordinating deadlines for the team, scheduling meetings as required. Develops editorial skills by supporting editors on all stages of the manuscript development process, writing revision letters, back cover copy, line-editing, and author management under supervision. New author development: proactively develops manuscript assessment and development skills under supervision with aim of finding new authors for publication. Qualifications Undergraduate degree Post-secondary publishing diploma an asset Some previous administrative experience an asset 1 years experience in the publishing industry, or a related industry, an asset A demonstrated knowledge of genre fiction an asset The ability to manage execution, to prioritize, to pay close attention to detail, and to deal with stress Strong communication, planning, organizational, teamwork, and problem-solving skills Creativity, decisiveness, functional/technical knowledge, computer knowledge, adaptability/flexibility, customer orientation and a drive for results.
