    SOUTHWEST CONSERVATION CORPS MISSION

    TO EMPOWER INDIVIDUALS TO POSITIVELY IMPACT THEIR LIVES, THEIR COMMUNITIES AND THE ENVIRONMENT. 

     

    PROGRAM OVERVIEW   The Acoma Hiking Club program engages local Native American youth ages 10-14 years old in daily recreation outings and activities and some conservation service. Within this program, participants will learn conservation ethics, environmental stewardship, the Keresan language, the Acoma culture, and basic outdoor skills through the enjoyment of hiking, biking, and various other outdoor activities. Crew Leaders will promote and teach environmental awareness, healthy living, and the Acoma language and culture by reconnecting the youth of Acoma with the outdoors, particularly with their ancestral lands of Acoma Pueblo, and local public lands such as National Park/Monuments and BLM areas. Crew Leaders will also need to monitor and promote participants physical and emotional safety

    Required Skills

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

     

    -Acoma Tribal Member

     

    -Knowledge and understanding of the Acoma language and culture

     

    -Some Acoma Keresan speaking skills

     

    -Willingness to learn the Acoma language and culture

     

    -Basic outdoor skills and knowledge

     

    -Age 21+ with valid driver’s license and clean driving record

     

    -Experience with youth or young adults

     

    -Experience in Conservation Corps, Youth Corps or other Youth Programs.

     

    Required Experience

    GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

     

    Commitment – Members must make a strong commitment to complete all aspects of the program including conservation projects, education, training and national service.  Members must commit to participating in all crew activities, including service days in local communities.

     

    Safety -You will be expected to take a serious attitude toward safety all day and every day.

     

    Professionalism – Members must be willing to appropriately represent the SCC Program and AmeriCorps.

     

    Substance Free – In accordance to a drug free workplace, alcohol, tobacco and drugs are prohibited while participating in AmeriCorps and SCC activities and while on SCC property.

     

    Fitness – Members are expected to complete projects that involve heavy lifting, hiking, and living outdoors for an extended period of time.
